3TJ/4DX owners...

Would there be any interest in being able to use the slightly more available 5x17" rear wheel from the Thundercat in place of the standard 4.5x17" 3TJ wheel? I'm just wondering, that's all. I don't know what the rules are regarding using non-standard wheels in the various race classes and I have the bits and bobs to measure stuff up.

Are you sure that the wheel will go in the swingarm?
I only ask as I tried to use the wheel from my 600 foxeye donor in my 3TJ and the hub was too big to fit the gap.

It's not that good of a mod for the 400's they're over tyred with a 160 profile on a 4.5 rim, a 5 rim would just make the turn in slower, shirley ???

Well, I was kind of thinking for a cheaper, more readily available alternative for people who wanted more than one pair of wheels or those who have hybrids and also I've got the parts in the shed so why not have a look!
So... I had a look and it is really tight but it's doable. The wheel would need to be spaced 1mm (!) in from the sprocket side but the studs clear the arm ok and the chain looks like it lines up using the chain slipper as a rough guide. The brake side would need a different caliper hanger making from 12mm plate as the disc on the 5" wheel is bigger. It'd probably be easier to use a TRX back end as it's the same length as the 3TJ and can be made narrower quite easily. A Thunderace or YZF750 arm will go in the 3TJ the same way and gives a 180 rear and the same wheelbase as standard :)

just asked this question and was ponted here....
so basically a striaght swap from a 750/t.ace will do it?
for me it makes life so much easioer as i have acces to a lot of good 180 tyres but hardly any 160's and also for wets.

No.
A rear wheel from a Thundercat (5") can be made to fit in the 3TJ swingarm but you need a custom caliper hanger and spacers.
If you want a 5.5" wheel to run 180 section tyres you need to use either a TRX850 swingarm and the wheel with custom spacers, or a complete Thunderace/YZF750 back end.
Does that help at all?

but you can run 180's on a 5" wheel i thought so why go for the 5.5"?
so do you,or do you know anyone that has or can make the caliper bracket and spacers as i this would be easier than putting anew back end on,plus my swingarm is all nice and clean, wouldn't want to put a manky old thing on there

Just my opinion, but you going to ruin the handling by messing about with wider wheels and tyres. As Boris has said, even a 160 on a lithe 400 is a bit OTT.
If its down to the fact you can get hold of 180's then you need to weigh up the cost of doing the conversion and then compare that to how much you will save in the long run by using 180's instead of 160's.
Seems like false economy to me........

Because the 5" wheel pinches the 180 tyre in and messes the profile up. I can make the hanger and spacers to fit the 5" wheel into the 3TJ swingarm but you need the matching sprocket carrier and disc too- the 3TJ parts don't swap over.
Nick- I was kind of floating the idea of a more affordable rear wheel set up for track day people or racers really, plus I've got the parts and I like changing stuff about
Shall I just make the parts up, then post up a pic of the bits fitted to a 4DX chassis?

The comment was mainly aimed at scooby, but i do agree that we need a more 'plentiful' supply of wheels and i think we all enjoy the challenge of making stuff work
