18,000km's and the first problem is.......

The reg/rec....

To cut a long story short, I smelt burnt plastic after parking my bike up coming back from a long ride. The connector block and reg/rec are both toast so I'm thinking of changing to a 5-pin R6 unit as I'm lead to believe they are a bit more stable than OEM.
I need some spade terminals as well as they were melted to the connector block and are jammed in. Are there a specific type I need to buy? Can someone help me out and link me to the correct ones?
Is it right the 5-pin connector blocks are not able to buy anymore? How to I get round this if this is the case?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, AlexWitham.

Just recently been told to use common type female spade connectors with a bit of solder on them just to ensure a good contact between the wire and the connector

Halfords Speaker Terminals Cat code: 131029-0

Tap this into halfords website and those are the ones im using

Hi Alex.
I did a rick Oliver conversion on mine 4-5 years ago which has just given up the ghost and I had a look at the forum which listed R6 regulator /rectifiers as a suitable long term fix . That said I bought an electrex one,(from electrex direct) which came with the block connecter and spade and blade terminals. If its the terminals u need then you could try a search for vehiclewiringproducts.eu. It's a uk site that obviously has widened its net appeal
The terminals are standard 6.3mm for the electrex one and judging from the pictures on here the same for the R6,
Regards, Rob

I had two electrex ones die after 8 months / 12 months and 3 days.

Didn't bother retuning the 8 months one as I'd lost the receipt.

R6 all the way :-)

So, do I need one of these 5-pin connector blocks to fit the R6 reg/rec?

Thanks for the link to the spade terminals dude. Ill be ordering them in due course.

Alex.

On closer investigation I take it all I need is 5 insulated female 6.3mm spade terminals which I will crimp then solder for extra strength and a pre 2005 R6 reg/rec. Anything I've missed off?

Thanks guys.

Recently did this mod to the wife's bike - Cammo (aka Dataracer and stickshift) has a guide with photo's on here somewhere... but all you say is correct I got my insulted connectors from Maplin, (they're the blues ones in there) and they're a nice snug fit.

Good luck

Oh - I didn't solder, there didn't seem to be to much margin for error, I did however practice the crimping.

Regulator connectors that come from the generator MUST be soldered onto the spades.

These connectors carry high loads >10amps.

As soon as the wires start to oxidise due to expore from the atmosphere the resistance will go up and the connectors will burn / melt / set-fire.

I ignored this warning from electrex and my auto manual and crimped them, 6 months later they had melted :(

Soldering them fixes the problem

Yep, I would really recommend soldering them also.

You don't need to be an expert at soldering to get a decent result. Just chop off a small piece of solder, rest it on the wire that pokes through the crimp connector and touch it with a soldering iron. Job done!
