I am tidying up some bits on my NC24,

I have removed the Generator cover for repainting and want to remove the Sprocket cover next to it as this needs painting as well.
It looks like the clutch cable is attached to this, so maybe not as simple as I first thought.

Is this easy enough to detach to get the cover off or is this a major task.

I dont know for this model but i couldnt imagine it being a biggie just a couple bolts. Just lay out any parts in order then you cant stuff it up

Minor task mate, just unbolt the clutch cable retainer (adjustor) attached to the engine cover and you will then have enough slack to remove the end of the clutch cable from the pivot/actuator on the sprocket cover. Just reinstall the opposite of this.

Simple job, get stuck in!

Easier than that, it's not like the NC30.. the clutch cable screws into the sprocket cover, theres no other retainer.

all you need to do is undo the 4 or 5 bolts that hold the sprocket cover to the engine (dont' mix them up there all different lengths) and wiggle the cover off.

I have already undone the 5 bolts for the Sprocket cover, wiggled it out a bit but clutch cable appears to be running through it.

Do I just undo the bolt on top for this cable so I can get the cover completely off

You don't need to undo the bolt.

The clutch cable screws into the sprocket cover and actuates a mechanism that pushes a rod into the engine.

When I take my sprocket covers off I leave them dangling by the clutch cable :-)

You do realise you'll have to undo the 10mm bolt and pull the gear lever linkage off the shaft (You can leave the lever attatched the frame) otherwise the sprocket cover will hit the gear lever and wont come out.

pulled gear lever linkage off, then removed sprocket - disconnected clutch cable and unscrewed sprocket cover, cleaned and painted.
Attempted to put back tonight, thought it would be straight forward - connected clutch cable onto sprocket cover but if I operate the clutch lever it doesn't spring back.
I appear to have lost a lot of the spring tension but I didn't adjust this.

If I use my fingers to pull on the spring lever where the cable connects it doesn't feel that strong, or is the cable not running freely or something

Have I done something stupid - I did try and rush this very quickly tonight

Never rush anything on your bike, espeically mechanical parts.. if it fails when your batting down the motorway at 100mph or so you'll really regret it.


There isn't that much tension on the springey part inside the sprocket cover, the pushrod presses it back out mainly.. sounds like you just need to adjust the clutch up properly.

Make sure the sprocket cover is on properly first,

Where the clutch cable screws into the spocket cover is adjustable by slackening off the lock-nut and screwing out the adjuster then tightening down the lock nut again.

adjust it out a bit and try again

Just me panicking before fitting it all back together properly.
Once it was seated right and all screwed back tight the clutch operates as it should.

Time for an oil change - so drained and filled/ put new oil filter on

Hopefully get out for a ride tonight/tomorrow
