regulator on way out ?

old bikes dont you just love them.... just finished sorting rear hub out etc have bike up and running going fine then notice that lights are flickering whilst revving or at idle, bike then cuts out and refuses to start when hot . is this symptomatic of the regulator going south

I'm going with a probably but maybe on this one.
You need to get your multimeter out and do all the voltage / current tests etc to find out whats going on with the charging system.
A bad earth can also produce very similar symptoms though.
However, playing the law of averages (especially when you consider Hondas R/R's) it's probably the first one.

its the larger uk spec finned regulator on mine but believe them to be made of chocolate like the rest , got an r6 reg that i never got round to fitting yet will get that on and take it from there . anyone advise what size the spades and wire type reqd are to do this mod

was posted up a while back on old forum i think.

Hi,
all you have to do is ( disconnect battery first!) remove the all female spade connectors out the honda plug, put some insulation tape round the yellow wired connectors, and cut off the two large spades on the red and black wires and crimp and solder standard size female spades on, and tape them up as well.
You shouldn't have to extend the wires if your careful when you cut off the old connectors.
If your handy with a file and oval out the holes on the R6 reg and use some 8mm M6 nuts you can fit it back normally without having to cut off one of the studs off, you may have to file down a couple of the fins as well.

I've never had to cut any studs off, my reg/recs have been held on with bolts that thread into the subframe.
As Ian says it's quite a simple job.

thanks guys, the r6 regulator i got last year has 6 spades doh ! on the hunt for a 5 spade one to get the job done .

checked charging voltage at battery pos+ whilst earthing meter probe to subframe initially was getting a reading off 12.2 volts at idle voltage dropping down to 4. something at 5000 rpm with headlights dimming, pulled multiplug apart noticed that someone has previously bypassed the plug with the 3 yellow wires and one off the spades is missing with evidence of burning at some time the plug is only in use for the red and green wires. gave plug a clean with acf50 waggled wires about connected back up and done a second meter test this time getting 13.8 volts dropping to 12.7 with lights on bingo !
picked up an 03 r6 5 pin reg off ebay and ordered some solder type spades and bought a butane solder iron so intend changing reg anyway as a precaution . the good news is the r6 reg is a direct bolt on to the subframe on a uk bike hole centres same as original mount, one question though the red and green wires coming from honda reg are doubled up when i replace with r6 item will i require piggyback terminals to maintain the double wires or can i use single wire
