I've got it out and and now have another query (nc24)

Well the filters out (see previous post)and i thought i'd look at the fuel tap. I'm confused (i'm also off my head on fuel after sucking and blowing - been looking at the wrong bike at one point thinking why are there 3 carbs instead of 4? doh!).
I have three pipes off the tap. The big one is the fuel pipe. I was led to believe the small one at 90 degrees (same direction as the fuel pipe) is for the vacuum pipe. The one on the outer casing and pointing down is an outlet (nothing connects to it).
I ask because it seems that I only seem to get the diaphram to work properly if i attach it to the nipple pouinting down (on the outer casing and suck). If i attach it to the middle nipple (which i was led to believe is the right one for the vaccuum hose) i have to blow to get a response.
All the above said - i've looked at a picture of an nc30 tap and the vacuum pipe seems to be on the larger nipple on the outer casing but pointing at 90 degrees.
Are the nc24 and 30/35 different in their set up?
