All import FZRs have a Japanese speed restriction which comes in at 180kmh (112MPH). The restriction started in 1988 with the 1WG 3EN1 model and carried on from there.
The CDI needs to recieve a 0kmh signal from the a small wheel in the back of the speedo or it restricts to 12,500 rpm, so if you disconnect the speedo the bike restricts.
But for a road bike you can fit a GOLD kmh to mph converter box at the botoom of the speedo cable ... so you 180kmh restriction is now 180MPH ... which you'll never reach

CDI's rarely go wrong and it's usually cheaper to just swap them for a seconhand one.
What's the problem with the bike's running ?

well according to the Mac there is no spark when the key is turned on but when it is off there is a spark for some reason. he says it is electrical but he doesn't work with that part of the bike. i would know where to get a 2nd hand CDI. i live in South Africa Durban... but i have to try. thanks.

Is it you working on the bike or the mechanic ???
Has this bike been running or have you bought it as a non runner ???
It sounds more like wires crossed than anything else - there are links to bike manuals in the general area.
Can you tell us -
do you have two round headlights or one trapizoidal ???
Do you have air intakes, are they above or below the headlights ???
