Hi all,
im fairly new to the forum and new to an RVF 400. I have a dedicated track RVF and my daily ride is a Daytona 675.
IM absolutely loving the RVF but was wondering if someone could give me some feedback on the rear wheel. Ive noticed that it doesnt spin particularly freely. Other bikes ive had have never shown this. Including an older VRF 800 which also has the single sided swingarm.
There is no notable friction ie brakes rubbing, it just seems unusually stiff. I can spin it with 1 hand but it certainly stops as soon as the spin pressure is taken away.
So my question is, is this normal for an RVF? is there potentially something i need to address? wheel bearings? I probably should also state that the chain is not too tight.

hi stu welcome to the site something sounds amiss thats for sure i would check your rear wheel hub it could be in bad shape

if you can remove it clean it regrease and refit and its its no better then it will need a replacment

Is this bike jacked up,or on a single sided stand when checking.

Stu, welcome, remove the rear caliper bolts and slip it off to eliminate the caliper / pad drag. and i asume your using an abba stand or similar (not using a single sided stand thats where the friction will come from) and spin again. the chain will also play quite a bit part on this too, esp if its about 500 years old and dragged through a sandpit.

Acid: I have removed the rear wheel and given it a bit of attention, There was no problem getting it off and everything appeared fine.

Hunter: Yes, i had it up on a single sided swing-arm stand. But i thought i found a thread in here that indicated that it shouldnt hinder the wheel..... Id love for this to be the problem... If so, then there is no problem :)

CRM: The chain & sprockets are fairly new (approx 6 months is my undertanding, 520 conversion), so hopefully thats not the problem. But from what you and Hunter have said, my understanding that the stand wont effect the spinning of the wheel is not correct.. Which hopefully would mean that there is no issue... :)

Stu, other option here, pop the chain off if softlink / splitlink or slacken the adjuster and slip it off to the side if you can, and try and rotate again.
my moneys on the caliper, but even a single sided stand is likely to cause some drag.
FWIW all my single sided bikes are very similar in terms of drag,

Thanks CRM, ill have another look at the calipers tonight when i get home. I thought they were ok, but cant hurt to take them off and check. I have a track day on saturday so want to make sure problems while im there..

Get someone to help you and hold the rear wheel off the ground using the side stand as a pivot. Spin it....

SOme stands have bearings in the holder - some don't.

I'll bet it is the stand friction inside the hub.

sounds like the stand is the problem,but may be wrong.

if you loosen off the pinch bolt and rotate the hub adjuster, you should be able to slide the chain off.

then spin the wheel. if it is still giving trouble i would take a guess it is the hub. as it is a single sided swingarm it has no cush rubbers so the hub takes more torque so will wear if not taken care of
