Getting rid of the ignition

OK. I lost my post, (I will get over it), so I am reposting this. I have a new set of yokes for my RS250 for conversion. The issue is that I will either have to get an adapter plate to mount the key ignition or just bin the whole lot and wire the ignition to a switch. I was thinking of using the Kill switch on the handlebars and wondered if anyone had done this or if there were any wiring hints.

Boring answer - be careful if you do the mod it doesn't invalidate your insurance as I doubt any company would insure the bike if they knew of this mod !

I should have said in the original post that this is a track bike and I do not insure it but thanks for the heads up I am sure others reading this might benefit.

I think the HRC wiring loom used to do this too.

I'll have a look on the wiring diagram later to see how its done.

royster on here has done this exact job on his track bike.

he will no doubt be along shortly to reveal all. if not search the old forum, i think there was a quite a long topic on the subject.

its a nice wee adition to the track bike i think. gives it more of a well sorted track bike feel about it, as opposed to a road bike that has just been stuck on track (if you know what i mean?) doubt i will ever be doing it. where i am the fecker would get nicked :(

I just removed the barrel and replaced it with a little switch mounted on a bit of carbon...although I want to get a loom made upsoon with the whole kill switch thing.

Its not difficult if you can read a wiring diagram and are handy with a soldering iron (cos you wouldn't want to do a "twist and tape" on the wiring joints, would you...?!).

Basicly, join the red wire from the main fuse to the black wire from the "ignition" and black/green wire from the "instruments" circuits (both found at fusebox), putting an inline 15A fuse there while you're at it. This switches everything through the stop switch rocker and you get to lose the fusebox at the same time.

twist and tape NEVER!!! I am more of the bubble gum and bailing wire type. ;)

Just updated the first reply to make it read more sensibly...

I'd recommend you buy some heat-shrink insulation from Halfords for insulating the joints, by the way.

Alternatively, you could send your loom to someone and ask them to prep it for you... ;)
