Redex in aging viffer?

'sup :)

right, me viffers nearly 100%, but until I get an impact driver to remove the knackered screws on the carb tray I can't do the valve clearances or look at the carbs.
It's got a little idling problem and now andagain it'll seem to bog down, I can't get to the carbs and haven't been able to since I got the bike, would a mild treatment of redex as a temporary measure do any damage?
More than likely they need balancing, rubbers replacing and a good strip and clean and I know redex isn't magical fairy juice but would it do any harm?

Cheers

Ive tried using redex for exactly the same reason in my NC30 (1994) and to be honest i didnt really find that it did any help at all. It certainly didnt solve the problem until i had the Carbs stripped, balanced and re-jetted. it hasnt done any harm using it, but i doubt you will notice and good either!

lol. Knackered tray screws? All of mine look like moon craters, I only hope the ham-fisted gorilla didn't make it any further into the engine...
Just taken it out for a blast and put Shell V Power in it. God it hates it.
Taken out most of the midrange, I know it's a higher octane and older motors tend not to like it but I thought I'd give it a treat seeing as it hasn't been out since the house move.
Back out later, I'll brim it with regular and a dash of Red, shaken not stirred.

Thats quite odd.

Are you sure it's not just the weather / other carb related trouble

87-99 RON doesn't really make any noticable difference in any of my older carb'd 80's bikes.

Redex will probably just be a waste of money, if you have blocked passageways the redex won't get there. it's more of a preventative than a cure.

Why not file a Slot into the screws and use a flathead to get them out?

Hey dude

it was running great until I filled up, now it's running like carp.
Idles ok and revs ok but there's just no midrange and less top end.

I did consider using the ol' dremel to slot the heads but seeing as there in such bad shape I'd rather try the impact first.

why do you want to take the tray off ? i hate it when the tray is off and the only reason i can think you want to do it is so the carbs will fall apart, you can service them ok with the tray attached

I further the warning about taking the Carb tray off! Ive had my Carbs apart more times than Ive ridden the bike in all fairness and I can certainly tell you that completely nut/bolt stripping and cleaning/balancing the Carbs is a complete doddle until it comes to putting the carbs back on the tray! Ha Ha. It is an awful job and I wouldnt recommend it if you can help it!

Definately get some new screws to put back in once you go tth eold fubar'd ones out!!

Uh oh. I'm filled with a sense of impending doom...

So I can service the carbs without removing the tray?
Can I leave the carbs on the tray and still get access to the top of the engine to do the valve clearances?
If I leave the carbs on will I be able to change the inlet rubbers if needed?

Sorry for the bone questions :)

Not to sound funny but do you know what your doing? :P You'll do more harm than good if you dont.

Are you on about the Airbox or the Tray underneath that the airbox bolts to?

Your gonna have to take the carbs off the engine to get to the valve clearances. You can do this with the tray on them but it's easier if you take the airbox off first. (but I don't think you have to)

To do this unbolt the jubilee type clamps on the rubbers in the middle of the V at the bottom of the carbs. The carbs will be stiff but can be levered off with a length of wood.

To do the valve clearances you'll need to move stuff thats in the way of the rocker boxes, namely front coils. I can't remember off the top of my head whats in the way of the rears, although I think the undertray might get in the way a bit.

It's not all that hard to do but you do need a clear idea of what your doing before you start :)

Which carb rubbers are you thinking about replacing? The Inlet rubbers or the velocity stacks, im confused now :)
