Full caliper overhaul VS brake upgrade: Discuss

having fully overhauled (seals out, calipers cleaned with a dentist scraper, pistons cleaned, red rubber greased, brand new seals) the calipers in my VFR and the six pots on my ZX6, i have to say the brakes on my little NC30 are better, farm better feel and feel really firm.
now some mite say i have not bled all the air out of the ZX6 caliper, but i assure you i did.

So my question to the forum is, are brake upgrades from newer bikes/more pistons really necessary? is a good thorough overhaul just as good?

i would like to know what people think about this cause im just about to overhaul my nc24 callipers an have been offered sone cbr600 ones so will they fit? kinda stole the thread lol :whistle:

It is well known that the ZX 6 pot calipers are bobbins...so get some 4 pots on and you are jammin..

ref the CBR ones Teddy - are they not identical to your current ones? I thikn they'll be sliding jobbies as opposed to oppsed piston ones... :ugeek:

Honestly i have no idea havnt seen them but mine are all dented thanks to a mate an a spanner wanted to kill him lol

if i had the cash i'd like to put new seals and pistons into a set of stock NC30 calipers but i think (and don't quote me on this) wemoto are charging a big piston and seals @ £18 and small pistons and seals @ £16 so fitting newer calipers is cheaper,stop better (in most cases) and shouldn't need an overhaul in a few years yet.

but i would like francey to clean them in his magic tank + new seals and pistons + new braided lines + new EBC discs and pads, i think that would be a good stopping '30... :peace:

No. Not sure if the seals might fit but they are very different (2pot sliding in comparison to IIRC 4pot opposed).

Aren't they tokicos same as Suzuki 6 pots? If so I wouldn't go as far as bobbins, they are ace when new with fresh pads.

BUT

1) The single pin allows the pads to rock from front to back, as the pads sit this wears the caliper body,

the pad movement means the pistons retract back slightly more than they should giving more level travel when you brake to take up the slack.
2) The pads tilt and wear diagonally, again this means he pistons retract back slightly more than they should.
3) More pistons means they move less so more chance of seizing.

That along with they cost a *fortune* to replace the seals and pistons on and there is no advantage to them.

This is why I'm going radial. ;)

VFRTeddy: Get the seals from Wemoto or Paul Smeetons.

DSS can supply them ( I got mine from there, but you'll need part numbers or just ring them up) they are not the same as the NC30 calipers.

The CBR600 calipers are virtually the same as you have now, 2 piston sliders.

I said this quite a while ago that the NC30 brakes with Standard Nissin pads are more than enough for the bike, I love the feel of them with the OE pads..I think druid was in agreement. Anyone that says otherwise probably has worn calipers / crappy pads etc.

The money it costs to overhaul the 30 calipers can be quite cheaper than an SP1 / Fireblade etc setup.

The only benefit I see is a good set of braided lines as the old rubber ones are probably well past their best :D

Yep, too pricey for me overhauling old calipers. I was considering overhauling some nc30 brakes I have, but the piston bores are getting old and it's risky spending a packet on new pistons and seals if the bores have seen better days. Used RC51 calipers were a much cheaper option.


My race bike uses nc30 calipers though and the brakes are stonking!
