NC29 Gearing For Phillip Island

Had to can my practice at Broadford today - the other half came home early for chrissy, and we want to spend the day together (she lives and works in Canberra, I'm in Melbourne). So, as a consolation for not getting my last ride of the year in, I've decided to treat myself to a Phillip Island ride on the 4th of Jan. Never ridden the NC29 at PI, so have no idea of gearing. Think I have a 39 tooth rear in the box, I'm guessing I'll need that. Should I throw a 14 tooth front sprocket on as well?

it depends which way the wind is blowing and how fast you are and how much hp your bike has. but basically if you run 16/41 -16/40 you should be pretty sweet. or any ratio from 2.5-2.56

As Dan said it depends. Your bike will push same gearing as mine or dans. Start with 15/39. Aim to be coming off mg and holding the 400 flat all the way. A good run will generally see you exit 12 flat in fifth, hitting 6th before the bridge. If the bike struggles or have a head wind go shorter, tail wind go longer.

i use 15/39 on the 23,and will be using the same on the 29...unless a headwind,in which case a 15/40...mind you,you lot are on modified bikes,so i plan to be in the draft on me stocky....in which case i still may use 15/39...but have sprockets down to 36 and get a good top speed after the tow muhahaha

Sweet, will dip into the box of bits, see what sprockets I can find. As I say in first post, pretty sure there's a 39 tooth sprocket in there.

Greg, yeah, that occurred to me as I was posting. As you get to know me, you'll find that I have a pretty shithouse memory for most things. Oh, and forgot to go to bank (see?), so just did online transfer for the tyre warmer repairs. Five bucks each, wasn't it?

no stocky will ever stay in the slipstream of a decent preped bike. i just need to find a cheap donor engine and spend some dosh on new parts to have a true rocket ship. frustrating when you have no money. good thing i just finished my apprenticeship.

all good and well,and a fair comment
but at the end of the day its how you ride the bike...stock or modified.
and judging from the times ive seen down here from the modified bikes compared to a stock bike...a few of us down here are wondering why the bother...no offence to the modified 400 owners btw.
