Skimming nc23 head

Hi all,
I'm having a littly fiddle round with the head on my spare motor. thought I'd remove the quietening gears, give the ports a bit of a fettle and polish (nothing major) I'd like to skim the head a little, maybe .25 mm but I have concerns about the mesh on the cam drive gears being too tight if I do so. Is it likely that taking off such a small amount will be ok? I couldn't detect any backlash in the gear train but I suppose I wouldn't as the quietening gears are still fitted.
If it looks like I can do all of the above I'll fit it to my race bike and give it a whirl.....
Thanks for all input, I'm just starting to learn about these little critters!
