Renthals and risers....

Someone here must have tried this. I want to fit some flat bars to my NC30, where i live now is all twisty mountain roads and my old wrists can no longer take it. Is it possible to drill the top yoke to take a set of risers or is it necessary to get a new top yoke? be really interested to hear from anyone who has already done this, before i get going. I haven't got myself a set of risers yet so i don't know it it's possible to fit them without having a problem with the webbing underneath the top yoke casting. Is the top yoke strong enough to be drilled for a set of risers? I tried to search but didn't really find any specific details.. i'm not interested in creating the ultimate streetfigher the bike looks way better with the fairing and clip ons...

I just dont think it would be viably possible.

Ok yes, it is possible, and the top yoke is a bloody solid chunk of metal, often chopped to buggery for race bikes etc so im sure it can still retain enough strength to have 4 holes drilled in it for risers etc etc..

But you will have the following problems:

A.) The wiring for the switchgear will no longer fit, and will need to be extended.
B.) You will have to remove the nose cone to get ANY steering lock on the bike, or, fit a steering block on it that prevents it from turning so much. Fine when going along a steady road, but for round town it will be useless.
C.) The Throttle cables will have to be made longer.
D.) You may struggle for clearance with the petrol tank.
E.) The bars will not only be restricted by the nose cone, but the front fairing stay might be in the way aswell.



At the end of the day, the NC30 is a sportsbike. Its as if your asking us to make it something else which there would be no point. just buy a Bandit or something...

I think it's entirely viable and i've seen it done already. I'm not really interested in opinions / arguments on whether i should bother and the whole ooooh you can't do that, i already have Z1000 (06), i just want some info from someone in the know before i have to work it all out for myself. However i guess you are entitled to your own opinion.

i have renthals and risers on my vfr, mine is streetfightered wit no fairing,all the cables will fit ok with no modding needed,but it could be a tight fit for the front brake lines,,mine just fit on snugly but id be happier if i had an extra inch or 2 play in the lines

Hi Kevin,

Do you have any info about the risers, make/model etc? Also did you attach, (bolt or weld) them to the original top yoke or a special?? A photo would be nice if you have one.. Another set of brake lines is no worries but i heard about someone that cut about 20mm of each end of the bars (Renthal road bars i think) to make them fit better??? Do you still get full steering lock L and R?

Personally, I'd think it best to drill right through and use a nut and bolt, after grinding clearance on webbing underneath if necessary. Easiest, safest and no doubt cheapest.

*Drilling and tapping isn't ideal, last thing you'd want is stripped bolt hole on your bars.
*If you don't tig weld, it's gonna cost yo, and potentially look untidy.

Clearance on the nosecone is a fair point too, i'd guess it may need to be modded or removed.

the risers i used were a 60mm rise,they were off a thumpstart pit bike and i drilled the top yolk and bolted them on,,i have no problems with turning left or right at all all works perfectly,,i havnt the bike here to take a pic of the risers as it up in a mates garden with rectifer and battery issues

I put risers on my firestorm. can't tell you about your bike - you'll have to experiement with fit. but for the risers I used Tag Metals (company name) risers - they have a variety of riser heights and bar widths. I ended up using a spiegler Fat bar - I liked the look of the fatter bar and it felt more secure. I just drilled straight through the top triples and bolted them up no problem. If you search for TAG risers you'll find a bunch of options. You'll have to search for a supplier here but this is what they look like. I thought LSL also sold something similar

OK seems like it's not too much effort then, thanks for the info and i'll get looking for a set of suitable risers...
