has the bike been stood?
have you tried revving it's a****e off for a few miles to see if it clears up

i say this b
because i run a kawasaki zx9r and when it's been stood for a period
the bike struggles at about the same revs as yours
i either let it warm up on drive then wack the throttle open to the red line 2 or 3 times
or take it for a spin a revv it's a****e
it then runs like a watch until i put it away for winter again.

as for cdi wouldn't have thought it would be different if off same bike

I had exactly the same problem. It's a common fault. See my thread further down this section called 'Superfour misfire around 5,500rpm'

Should do, so many Hondas carry this wire - even Dad's Hornet, that doesn't have a speed restrictor.

Open up the headlight - you should find two clusters of wires running from the loom to the clocks - you want the larger of the two clusters - the wire could look a little darker with age but it should be there. Your symptoms are pretty much identical to mine - even after going to lengths of changing the coils, leads, plugs, sorting and balancing the carbs, etc, my bike's problem ended up being that silly little wire. Not sure if the old forum archives are still up and running, but I found quite a bit of useful (and detailed) information there.

Here's the wiring diagram of an early CBR400 - the clusters and colour of the wires (as well as their routing) is identical to my 1993 Superfour.

If you've still got the problem by the weekend - I'll take my Superfour's headlight apart and take some photos of what I did.
