Carbs, how to clean ?

Hiya, I did do a search but without any luck (probably just rubbish at searching) but is there a guide anywhere on cleaning the carbs (or can anyone give me any advice) I had the carbs off when putting in the restrictors and they seemed pretty filthy so they need a clean!

I have some carb cleaner spray but apart from that nothing and no knowledge on carbs (never had a vehicle with carbs before!)

Cheers :)

just done mine and their a piece of piss to do

first take the slide covers off (the round things on the top), do them one at a time so you dont muddle up parts, their will be a big spring the plastic slide which will have a needle in it, cover these in carb cleaner check for splits in the slide and take the needle out check wot size it is and how many shims under it for future reference.

then move onto the float bowls (lower bits), take cover off the unscrew the jets emulsion tubes (basicly everything made of brass) take floats out check their not split and cover everything is cleaner and scrape any residue off. check jet sizes etc for future reference.

reset float heights (see haynes manual), replace the carb float bowl seal (avalible from rick o) and put everything back together, then for good measure spray the rest of what is in your can on the outside for the carbs, should clean it up pritty well and get them looking alot better.

hope that all made sence, dont be woried about doing it its really easy and you'll learn a bit about how it all works in their

Its the choke cable and throttle cable that needs to come off then they just lift away (had to take them up to put washers in but never actually totally removed them)

yeh disconect the choke cable at the front, take the idle adjuster out of its mount and discounect the throttle cables then they should come right off

Good advice!

Check all the settings carefully, the front & rear carbs use different needles and emulsion tubes, you'll be amazed at how well a previous owner has screwed this up putting them back together!

When you take the jets (pilot and mains) and tubes out, make sure there are no blockages.

Sounds daunting but pretty easy when you see what needs doing.
