My race bike build
Some of you may have read my "Road bike to Streetstock racer" thread a while ago about me turnign my road nc30 into as much of a racer as I could get away with while still keeping it a usable road bike (when it had its road fairings on) as it was my only form of transport.
Well after 4 trackdays and 1 race meeting I was getting really worried I would bin it and also spending the day before and after the meetings transforming the bike was doing my head in so for some time I was looking for a project nc30 to turn into an out and out racer.
So i picked up a perfect project bike for £500 that had a very nice looking mystery twin system on it (sp1 style but a bit lower). when I got it we couldnt get it to start fully but Im pritty sure it is because the vaccume pipe from the tap was broken and not connected. her's how she looked when I got her

then started the strip down to find everything is in well...really good nick; no rust on subframe, undertray mint chain guard mint system is polishing up well seat unit uncracked just a few scratches one side, hub adjuster is like new, tank good minor dent apart from the obviouls fact that its been sat in a garage for the last 3 years its all really good, it was almost to the point were I was thinking of turning the roady into a race bike and this into a very nice original road bike
... then I thought fuck it
,dont have time, lets get chopping
first action was the usual strip down then I got the hacksaw out and had a go at the front sprocket cover, cutting the speedo drive mount part out and allowing easy changing of sprockets aswell as loosing a bit of weight took rads off for a clean up and cleaned the everthing as best I could to see what condition it was all in, so far all good

Re: My race bike build
(doing this in several posts as whenever I write a fair bit it keeps jumping up and anoying me)
her's a picture of the sprocket cover

next rebuilt carbs, sadly nothing trick inside, standard jetting so not sure the bike has been run properly with the system as I would think a twin system would affect the fueling quite alot, am I right?, also started making up some new fuel lines from some f1 spec lines I had in the garage, I think they look quite cool but others might not agree lol

then smev was very helpful in coming over a showing me how to check the valve clearances, checked mostly good but a couple of new shims ordered, thanks again mate
Iv also ordered a zx7r subframe off ebay which im going to fit as a cheep way of getting a lightweight ally subframe so when that arrives il let you know how I get on, mabe do a how to if anyone else is interested in doing it.
but here's the planned spec for the bike:
twin system dyno setup
steering damper off road bike
Possible HRC RC45 rearsets (but would rather not as like them on the roady)
zx7r subframe
referbed forks
FOX race shock
rear brake through swinger
ally brackets all round
custom race Loom
cbr/sp front brakes braided lines and mastercylinder (either off roady or another set not sure)
RVF Wheel
520 chain and sprockets
and all possible things removed that are not needed for f400/ss400 racing
then with my rs tail and rvf fairings fitted
stay tuned lol

whole zx7 tail section minus bodywork £40 posted, everything other than battery tray and subframe will be sold along with standard nc30 subframe and undertray, hopefully I can get enough so the mod will be free

Re: My race bike build
I got the idea from someone off pb forum at a tracday at oulton park, its an ally subframe and he said uncut its about 3kg lighter than stock and needs minor mods to fit
for my seat unit I only need the rear bolt mounts (front are on the frame) so I may need to make some brackets up for that and weld them on but apart from that is should be pritty simple, he had it with an rvf seat unit and was still using the storage bit underneath

Re: My race bike build
Right bit of an update as its been a while
well my original deadline has been and gone (Odiham trackday to test last weekend) I was stopped by an big electrical problem that is still got me stumped but thats another thread
the z7r subframe is done, a big thanks to Terry Weedy at Avery Products for helping out with welding and letting me run riot in his workshop for the day. It awesome now and th ebest £40 iv ever spent on a bike, il get it on the scales soon to see what she's come in at but standard it was 1/2 kilo lighter than a stock nc30 one and I recon we've cut another 1/2 off with still loads that could be done to lighten it still.
also cheers to smev for the exhaust hangars, they rock and with a couple of ally extension brackets Iv made up they support the exhaust perfectly now, although I will be taking the hacksaw and file to them to hollow them out a bit and look a bit more weight (Colin Chapman eat your heart out).
exhaust is all polished up, all the joints are lock wired together and re-fitted,
Iv spent what seems like and eternety cleaning out the lower rad, you wont believe how much mud was in it and it was in pritty good nick both rads all painted up and refitted hopefully cooling shouldnt be a problem, rad fan removed
their's a new airfilter in for until I get a ram air kit sorted (winter project), new castrol 10/40 part oil and champion filter and new plugs will be going in once I get her running.
Iv tried to simplify things as much as possible, done away with the choke cable assemble in favour of a cable tie lol got rid of the fuel overflow pipe and simplified the tank breather pipe and HRC'd the fuel tap
I need to sort this electric problem then hopefully she will start up, get it on a dyno to see whats what then we will know were we are and hopefully have time and funds to get a mallory park test session in before its first race at thruxton on 17th of october.
