Hey all, need help if poss, ive tried to remove the exhaust off my girlfriends nc23 and 2 of the bolts snapped off they just to small to grip with molegrips and today i noticed that next to the snapped bolts the engine has little cracks in it you can see them in the pics, i have no clue if this can be fixed (if it needs fixing) i dont want to pay to have bolts drilled out and holes retapped if head of engine is wrecked cos of these cracks ImageImageImageImageImageImage

Im not sure if i should look for a new part of the engine or try get this bit fixed, can these cracks be welded? any help here would be great as my girlfriend aint to happy with me atm:) Thanks

Ps sorry text all over the place im not to used to forums.

Afternoon mate,

I had a similar problem with my 600 engine..

To remove the snapped stud.. try the following..

Coat in WD40 or penetrating oil..
Use a blow torch to heat up the metal around it, try not to heat up the stud if you can..
You will need to use the plier like tool with the adjuster on the end..I think there called vice grips?

Be carefull and undo the stud slowly.. should be ok..

Abut the crack.. see what its like once the new studs go in.. see if they get bigger or not? could be just on the surface?

Good luck!!

if what woody wrote doesnt work, you can always try WD40 ;)

more seriosly after doing what he said, (or before rather) use a file to add 2 flat faces onto what remains of the stud, so that you can grip it better

hey, thanks for the info, i had another try and had no luck i just made what was left smaller so ive sent it to the shop to get them to fix it, He gonna drill them out he said thats only option now. fingers crossed the little splits in the head are only small and wont need welding, i wont know until studs have been drilled out.:)

mole grips be what you need to get hold of the ends :)

can you weld crack in thr head? if its cast?
I thought that had to be some form of stitching.

Heli-coils can be used i think.... that way no welding would be needed.

before i removed my headers, i started spraying WD40 on the studs/nuts 3 days before i removed them. *touch wood* all of them came out with no issues.

Well all fixed:) only needed them drilling out the cracks not as bad as they look:) He put 2 inserts of some kind in the holes and put two new bolts in. Cost me £85 Could have been alot worse.
Thanks again for the replies ;)
