was there any burning on the plain or friction plates? In what way was the pushrod finished? The basket's sides would have to be pretty bent to allow the plain/friction plates to turn within it.. It might be the diaphragm springs on the end, place all 3 of them on a flat surface ontop of each other and measure their height,4.8mm is the min, if these are worn the clutch plates may not properly re-engage when clutch cable released

the clutch springs were changed with the plates.the needle bearing that pushes the push rod was completly shot as was the cable (which did snap)could these 2 things have caused this problem ?

By clutch springs do you mean the coil springs on the back of the clutch housing? These are to dissipate vibration and dont affect the sandwiching of the plates.. The diaphragm springs are at the end of the pushrod and provide that sandwiching force to keep all plates together and not slipping once the clutch pushrod is released.. If they are worn, there might be insufficient force keep the plates together once the clutch is released
If you replaced the cable and bearing the prob should be fixed.. Maybe also check that the clutch nut is torqued sufficiently and staked so it cant move

What oil do you have in it, new fully synth can cause clutch slipping

What happens when you select higher gears,if it slips in the higher gears then it's the clutch.
