when I was reading b4 I bought mine, and joined this forum, I read that the gk76a (specifically the 1989-1990 model) was the first to have upside-down forks and better brakes n stuff, but the last to be the full 59bhp b4 japanese law said that 400s had to have a max of 53bhp at stock - all this may be totall rubbish as I'm new to all this myself, but it may help if it turns out to be fact :google:

Personally, I think 'best' is very subjective in terms of performance or looks etc...
In terms of outright performance, the 59HP models ran up to 1992, and even then, there's only around a 6hp disparity with the later engines. Considering the age difference, a later model may actually be more powerful as it's less worn, and less likely to have been raced.
Certainly, the 4-pot calipers on the GK76a are an improvement over the earlier brakes. The USD forks look a lot better, but there's a weight penalty and i'm not sure they perform any better. My forks are fully adjustable (I have an SP), which is a boon if you can find them.
If it was me, i'd be more concerned with condition than finding one with the right pedigree ;)

I know of a 1988 bike with a new engine but has a wiring fault that hasn't been started for 2 years. It is supposed to be in very good condition, i havn't seen the bike yet and thats all i know about it (i posted a tiopic "how much for" about is)
My thought was that if it was in good condition that i would have a second project over the winter.

The bike i like the best is i think a 1992 model, the style of the frame is similar looking to the GSXR 1100 K/L and has a screen over the headlights....Is that a GK76????

I am considering selling mine, if you mail me your address I can send you some pics. Might have to clean off all the Scottish road-dirt it's still wearing first ;)
To be honest, I don't want to sell it, but I could really do with something a bit better suited to touring. I was having to keep the revs up to avoid being dropped off from the bigger capacity bikes (FZS600 & XJR900).
