First ever NC30 track bike and need some guidance

Hi there, this is my first ever go at the forum thing so here goes.

I am a newby to the trackday scene and i have just bought a 1992 NC30. Currently it is not running but i think this is a carb problem which is getting sorted. Basically i am carrying out the following; check valve clearances, clean and refurb carbs then balance, check air filter, change plugs, change oil filter and oil, flush coolant system and refill, change fork oil and seals, re-new brake fluid, check pads, add new rear sets and crash bobbins. The bike already has new chain and sprockets and new bridgestone tyres. I'm not interested in paying stupid money in getting an extra 4 or 5bhp because thats what you buy a 600 for. What i'm after is a fun and cheap toy to sling around the track to save damaging my 2007 aprilia rsv1000r!! Therefore all i am looking to do now is upgrade the rear shock. I want a cheap upgrade that is fairly simple to carry out. I have read up on the RS250 shock replacement and after speaking to another member on here over ebay he tells me that all i need is the rs250 shock and replace the spring with the nc30 standard one as i only way 12 stone and this should do me. Is this correct and where would i get a decent but cheap shock from? Many thanks.

Welcome to the site.
Let's have a look at the moto then
Shock wise...best bet is on rgv250.co.uk or rs250forums... I sold one a while back so out of luck there..
I have an RS250 shock and had an extra rebound shim fitted and an ohlins spring for my weight (as I was a fatty at that time)
You have to factor in the shock rebuild and all it needs to fit is a 1.5mm filing of either the bottom fork or the NC30 knuckle.
the top of it needs a slight shaving too..but you'll see all this if you get one.
where you based? You can have a look over mine if you are local.

Thanks for the welcome
Photos of the bike are on
http://www.bikepics.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (honda/vfr400/1992) I have the same name on there as here. The pics are from the guy who i bought it of. I will be adding more pics as i progress with the bike.
Right down to the shock. Looks like i'll be looking for a rs250 shock then. Is it best to go for one with an adjustable ride height, which i assume were on the later models?? Not to sound too dumb but why did you need to add an extra rebound shim, would i need to add one? Could a NC30 spring fit a rs250 shock? There is one for sale on ebay that i am watching that is a standard nc30 spring but is rated at 850lb. Finally how much is it to have the shock rebuilt, is it expensive and who do you suggest can do this?
I live in Lincoln by the way.
Cheers again mate

On the coolant flush thing, make sure you only have water in the system when on track.
Sounds like your going about things the right way, I have an RVF with a great chasis and a standard engine and have won quite a few club races on it and haven't had to touch the engine in 4 seasons (other than servicing).

Daz,
I've just gone and bought some ice cool coolant so this time i will be using that. Is it better to just water then?
I have just checked all the valve clearences today and 60% of them are out of tolerance! So it will be on to David Silver on Monday for some replacement shims. Forks and carbs go to Paul Harrison (ex chief mechanic for R6 cup) to be sorted and then when re-fitted the bike will go back to him to be set up and balanced. Would be nice if he has stolen some ohlins fork internals to fit in mine!!!!!
Thanks for the advice tho

The ice cool stuff is better but you have to run plain water on the track incase you have a spill, coolant doesn't evaporate. I drain mine and fill it back up with coolant after the race cos' leaving water in could rust the insides.
Should run sweet after a full set up like that.

Daz,
I'm only planning on doing track days on it so it should be okay with the ice cool stuff shouldn't it?? I'm not racing it because that costs way too much and the wife is already kicking the be-jesus out of me for the time and money i have already spent on it
It better bloody run sweet after this! I just hope when it's all rebuilt and i touch the starter for the first time it barks into life. If it doesn't then i'll break down and cry like a baby!!

Track days will be fine, thought you were racing. Once you get the bug it won't be long before you start wanting to 'just see how you would get on' in a race, it's a slippery slope but oh so good!!

Brooky,
What year is it and whats the condition, oh and how much?
I assume you've shaved the shock and not the linkage then?
