NC30 servicing - scotland ??

Anyone advise what sort off price you would be looking at for a full service on an nc30 ?? been a good few years since the last service and even thou the bike has only done a few thousand miles since then it was the previous owner who had it serviced and well .. you never really know just how much off a " service " it actually had ??!!

I take it with a full service on the nc30 it includes shims etc ?? have a set off spark plus here waitting to be fitted so obviously the overall cost would not have to include these wee buggers !! also being that the bike has sat for around a year unused would it be best to get the carb serviced / cleaned whilst I am at it ??

based in fife in scotland - any semi local recomended garages ?? any experinced nc30 mechanics local to fife up for a homer ??

Mate, have a go yourself. Bet you can at least change the plugs and drop the oil and maybe the oil filter. Take you a couple of hours. Get stuck and there'll be loads of help on here.

have to agree.. Having just bought one a few months back and started a full strip down its actually a fairly straight forward bike. Lots of top advice here if you hit a prob. Get stuck in to valve clearances too.. Was a bit apprehensive but following the step by step sticky in the workshop forum and it really is easy. I had to replace 4 shims and it was really straight forward.. At upwards of 30 quid an hour for a mechanic you ll save a fortune and be sure the jobs done right.. I often wonder just how well workshops actually service the bikes given their time constraints.. Get stuck in is my advice too however if all else fails I bought my bike off of mike skinner, skinners motorcycles in Dundee and he has a good reputation. Sure he ll know his way around the wee V4 as I think he was a honda technician a while bac..

Okay first off all thanks for the replies / words off encouragment !!! thinking about it then yes you are correct sure changing the oil / plugs and filters myself could be easily anough done and as you say at least you know its actually be done !!

okay as I say have the 4 x plugs ready to be fitted, will obviously require oil and a suitable oil filter, noticed the deal within the following ebay link, worth considering ?? was always under the impression its always best to go with original replacment parts ie filters etc stick to a genuine honda filter or the one in the link look okay ??

air filter- again genuine honda or clean original if it looks okay ??

will take it a step at a time if anyone could offer any advice re the oil / filter then that would be great can get that ordered up and take it from there.

It's not terrible, but considering you'd have to wait for the stuff to arrive and that you're paying about the same as in the shops...

There are at least 3 Hein Gericke shops in Scotland (Glasgow, Edinburgh & Aberdeen) http://www.hein-gericke.co.uk I'd pay one of them a visit and check out their own branded oil (about £20 for 4 Litres I think); some peeps on here reckon it's exactly the same as the Motul stuff! While you're there, see what the oil filter costs too; probably around the £6 mark. Not sure if they'll have the air filter too, but can recommend these guys: http://www.wemoto.com/ air filters from them start at £17 (inc VAT) + delivery.
Rick Oliver or Graham France are both members on here and can possibly sort you out too! 8-)

Have just read a write up on changing the oil on the nc30 in an old copy off Grey bike magazine, mentioned about replacing the crush washer, where do I get one off them then ?? take it 4 ltrs off oil is enough for the oil change yep ??

oil filter wrench - do I deffo need one oor is there a diy alternative ??

also whilst I am at it, the changing off the plugs, any last minute tips regards removing the old ones / fitting the new ones ?? should come out okay ??

Crush washer is a case of fit it if you have it. I never have in several years and lots of oil changes. ust nip the sump plug up nicely and don't strip it ;) You know this though!

Oil filter wrench - luxury item Get a cloth and your hands on the filter and splin it off. If it really fights, get a thick screwdriver, punch it through it and use it to lever off...watch out for making a mess :shock:

Plufgs - 13mm deep socket. The rear ones are easy peasy - use the socket to loosen them off and then a magentic pen thingy to drag them out, or if not, the plug caps onto the tops and pull them.

Front ones are a git - get a bit of card to cover the back of the top rad of your'll skin your knuckles nicely.. It is a tight fit but can be done as per haynes by taking the lower bolts out and swinging it forwards.

obviously have a go yourself but if you have to take it anywhere i would recommend taking it upto bob grants at knockhill.very well priced and his work is second to none.usually preparing bikes for racing his work on the nc30 is very easy and not a problem.
