Problem with Rev counter?

I have fitted a mechanical mph converter to my 88 FZR 400 via the front wheel so as to be able to tell how many miles I have done and also the correct speed in mph, However now I have noticed that my rev counter seems to have increased by a couple of thousand revs ie now at 70 mph,(checked by fellow biker alongside) the rev counter is now off the clock. Can anybody explain why this is the case as it dosnt seem right..

I had a problem with my Rev count on my 86 1WG.
I found that it was due to a broken wire under my tank, sent my rev count and temp gauge loopy, don't think this is the problem with your bike but it could be a possibility.
sorry if it don't help your problem

try taking the mph converter and see if the rev counter changes ... I doubt it will. Sounds like electrics and as suggested it could be a wire breaking or earthing out. Have you changed anything electrical ?
