my '86 Nc24 has become hard to start on the button and i cant work out whats wrong. Any ideas would be welcome please.
It bump starts easy enough but wont have it on the button. Tryed full choke, no choke, little bit of choke and full moon etc etc. During attempting to start on the button the electronic gauges' needles jump about and generally freak out. Anybody recognise whats happening?

new battery. reads 13v (when running) across terminals, turns over quickly from the button, fuel fresh, temper fraying!

any ideas welcome please as I dont like bump starting on busy roads!

im no electrics guru but id suspect you ignition is earthing out some where? has it been left outside lately?

yes it is stored outside but it hasnt previously been affected by the crap weather. Are the electrics prone to problems on these bikes?

shouldnt it read about 14 volts when running ? Possible regulator on the way out ?

Old spark plugs even maybe

It sounds very electrical, i'd stop riding it until you've found the problem as if it's electrical you might be causing more issues.

Since it bump starts im going to rule out plugs / fuel etc preliminary.

If it won't start off the button the battery is too low, even if it cranks.

It should really be reading around 14.2v when running.

This suggests a failing reg/rec and possibly old / knackered battery.

Test all of the electrical system, Altenator, Reg/Rec and Battery and go from there.

If you look at the reg/rec you'll see a plug with 3 yellow wires, you may see thats a bit burned if its been overheating (i've seen some melted completley) as people carry on running their bikes with a bad reg/rec and battery until it fries the altenator too
