Are you lot really having a discussion about fitting plugs?
I mean if you cant even get a plug out without breaking the bastard surely that is your clue to bury the toolbox in the garden.

okay, so i tried it again, found a plug lying about in my toolbox, probably one of my older ones. and i took the airbox and stuff out to see what was going on, and i noticed in the cabrs there is a hell of a lot of condensation. and i pushed the diaphragms inwards with my fingers and i gave full throttle to open the butterflies, and i can see like smokey build up in there ( i did this while the ignition was off) and i let go of the throttle, tried to start the bike, and i see smoke come out of the carb venturi. is that normal? and its backfiring a hell of a lot now.

EDIT: The smoke from carb venturi is a carb backfire apparently. and it can happen with wrong ignition timing.... does anyone think this is the case here? how could something like connecting an PRM Signal wire to the primary ignition coil mess with the ignition timing?

and yes i am getting fuel, checked the float bowls. full of it.

It hasn't altered the ignition. The bike is flooded, simple.

What you're seeing is normal, it certainly won't be helping using full throttle and tryung to start it with the airbox off.

you can start the bike without the carbs if its flooded, theres maybe enough fuel in there to get it to fire! But if its back firing its just flooded, try cleaning the plugs again, there a bitch to start if there that flooded, maybe try some easystart down there, drain the carbs and leave fuel off, give it a few quirts and try it.

How many times have you been told to listen?

Most if not all experienced members on here have told you to try plugs.

How you latched onto ignition timing is beyond me.

Ignition timing is set by the position of the camshafts as it is gear driven camtrain. Unless you have removed the cams then that is fine.

The problem is once again listening.

You have a set of symptoms yes.

i.e: bike isnt starting, backfiring etc etc.

The problem is those symptoms match about 20 different things.

Maybe you are searching on the net or something but you can either

1. Try all possible things relating to symptoms (a.k.a needle in haystack)
2. Listen to the people on here who have had this problem hundreds of times and replace the plugs.

Fully charge the battery, new plugs and full choke not throttle and it shoudl start up ok.

Take the choke off as soon as you can to avoid fouling the plugs and let it run upto a good hot temperature.

Unless your getting it really hot the crap doesnt burn off the plugs well, using choke adds to this, so very quickly they will shit up, add on the fact you think the battery is goosed then it wont be starting as easily so messing the plugs up more.

I agree with the reply above, I'd like to add: "Patience".

When you wake up today (doubt anyone is up yet!), put the battery on charge, take the plugs out and leave them out for a few hours, leave the bike in the sun (if it's shining) and clean your garage/toolbox/whatever. After a few hours of the cylinders being exposed to the air, give the plugs a good wipe and bit of heat from a flame.

Pop them back in *slowly and carefully* then re-attach HT leads properly. Re-attach the battery now it's had 3-4 hours of charge time. Fuel tap on, almost full choke, no throttle and crank it over. If it doesn't crank over in 15 seconds, try a bump start. I always end up bump starting mine as I find it works more often for me when starting my bike after a 3-4 month stand still.

Once it's started, LEAVE IT. Take the choke off after a few minutes and just leave it for 10-15 minutes. After 10 mins give it a few revs, ride it round your drive, whatever, then leave it until it's up to temp. THEN you can turn it off.

Just be methodical, be patient and listen. As Neo said, your timing is fine, not sure where you got the idea that it's wrong, but it's fine, unless you've done anything with the camshafts - which I'm sure you haven't. These bikes are just a bit tricky to start after being laid up for a while - and even harder to start when every time you DO start it you turn it back off again.

I've not long got my project bike running 1st time in about 20 years, new plugs warmed up, fully charged battery started after about 5 mins of trying. Like everyone else has told you.....your battery is shit, put on a battery charger not the Oxford thing. Sort your plug it will start

my bike has not started for ages - I might go and get it going and film it...but then it might not work..lol

But, I did pop the battery on charge last night, the fuel has been in there since about september..

I'll be going for the full choke, no throttle..when it catches, I'll release my choke (racer cic ziptie) and I'll hold the throttle open a teeny tiny bit.

Let me see what goes on..might be some really boring footage soon.
