Any tips on removing the shims without a magnet, Halfords and Mcquillans didn't have any.

A dod of grease on a flat-head screw-driver, but you can't beat the magnetic pen though. Just be very careful.

not a chance in hell i would go at it with anything but a magnetic pen.
like gareth says that dab of grease trick is recommended by the haynes manual.
its not that hard to get the cam covers off and get the TDC right and all the rest of it, the measuring of the shim tolerances isnt even that hard, but taking them out and then putting shim back in is near on impossible by yourself and close to possible with a helper. ( i do have very fat fingers tho!!)
my advise is hang on for another day or two and get the magnet before you go at it.
