Not looking forward to it but I WILL get the clearances sorted and balance the carbs. I've just started working nights so time and money are no excuse. The tapping noise dies off as the engine warms up so I. Guessing it's valve related *gulp*

How do you get the shims out if you have quite a few. Remove the cams? Or isit possible to get all the cams at a position to access all the shims?

you can set the cams to allow access to the frist set of valves change them and then set the cams to a different position to allow access to the remaining valves. Its all explained in these pages have a look through mate....

I realised that about a day after posting. Cheers anyway.

did mine the other week , it really aint that bad when you get stuck in , just gotta be super careful not to drop the shims down into the engine, slide rocker arms over and use one of them telescopic rods with a little magnet on the end to lift out the shim, crap for gettin them back in tho , i used a little modelling file with a bend in the end with a blob of grease to stick the shim to, done the job perfect, check the gaps and recheck,

And unlike me remember to take out anything you use to block any holes the shims might fall down. Left a tissue in mine by accident and engine go boom Think it would of been ok if i had of used a cheap tissue but i used bounty, bloody good stuff if you have an oil leek by the way....

Which feeler gauges to use, the straight or angled ones?

Can you get one set that will cover the entire range of tolerances for both inlet and exhaust?

As for feeler gauge. I used a 21 blade type straight one from tengtools...that is part.no.FG21 This will cover most of them.

There are more brands and types on the market, from cheaper ones (universal brand from Hein Gericke) to even more expensive ones (gedore).
Check the ratings per blade. For example, if you need to check size 0.17mm, just use blade no. 0,15mm together with blade no. 0,02mm.
