There's no way to test it that I know of, it's usually a case of swapping it onto another bike to see if it works properly.

What resistance do your "new" pickups measure? For most people diagnosing ignition unit faults is limited to ensuring there is power, ground and pickup signals and then substitute another good unit.
my new pickup shows 399-415 ohms, still less than what the haynes manual says (450-550 ohms) hope they still work.

The resistance values for all things electrical on most cars and bikes are nominal. So long as they are not open or short circuit.

Things like that don't just fail when you've been messing with the bike.

You've either killed the plugs or disturbed something

well, all 4 plugs dead at the same time? what are the chances in that.. i hadnt done ANYTHING to the bike... one day the starter clutch broke.... so i changed that and now there is no spark... before the starter clutch broke the bike was working....

If both pickup units are faulty then you will have no spark on any plug. I do not see this as a strange outcome. What I find strange is that both pickups failed at the same time. However if the pickups were being hit by the starter clutch as it rotated that could damage them.

Or you've installed the starter clutch wrong so the timing is out and its' not sparking athte right time.

i have to say this thread makes a very interesting read, think if i was this unlucky id give up all things that have engines! frank spencer springs to mind!!
on the sparking issue, i recently had an issue with mine after i had partly stripped it down, where i had removed the l/h crash bung it left a small plate with an earth lead attached adfirt from the engine case, spent ages trying to find out what id done, and eventually worked out that i had basically disconnected the earth by leaving the bracket un attached, thus giving me no spark on any cylinder, i refitted the plate via the crash bung and it fired up straight away! might be worth checking you havent made the same mistake as me, not sure if you have done anything in that area at all. its worth listening to the other guys on here, and checking what they say, there is some very experienced people on here who know there stuff! keep up the good work though, think id miss this thread if it ever finishes!
