Turned this mess into something usable. The Reg Rec plug was chopped off the other loom and wired into this one. Aswell as the whole lot being cleaned and retaped.


Mounted quite a few bits here, lhs grip glued and lockwired on, rhs switchgear mounted (hole drilled), quick action throttle and clutch cables.

Need to get a box of parts zinc coated now before I get the engine in.

Was sick of looking at the manky rear shock and I managed to get (rather cheaply) a BMW s1000rr rear shock and RVF lower linkages. My reasoning behind using the rvf linkages is because the bmw unit is slightly longer than the vfr, which would lower my ride height, not something I want at the moment.

So far I have had to skim the top of the bmw shock to 38.4mm across to fit the chassis and change to a 800lbs spring. The guys at HM Racing have said to me it'll definately need revalving as the rebound isnt great from the factory but also said to set the sag before spending any money with them.


Will hopefully have it in the bike at the weekend and will report back any more mods that were needed.

Ok well I got the shock in tonight.

All that was needed was to file the frame back slightly on the back of the undertray mount. 3mm approx.


All torqued up with one half of the RVF linkage, waiting on the other half to come back from zinc coating.


After reading through the BMW riders manual Ive set it to normal riding for the compression and to hard race on the rebound to compensate for the valving. Will do as a starting point.

How did you get on fitting the spring tim? Ive done mine today and its quite loose, 2.25" equates to 58.5mm aparently, even though it should be just over 57mm, the internal dia of the bmw spring is 52mm so just wondered what others thought, And faulkner dont do a 2" spring.

Maxton said the stock s1000rr is like a pogo stick but said it would be a better upgrade for a vfr over the stock shock, so will do for now.

I did wonder this. HM racing fitted it for me, and they were happy with the result so I thought no more of it.

Everyone seems to say the same about it, HM used the term bouncy.
Even with another £150 to revalve it, it'll still work out a cheaper option to the basic spec Nitron.

150 ain't bad, HM racing have always been top dollor when I've had stuff done there. So did they think it would be worth while having it revalved? I really like the look of it with a black spring.

Think he said £120 aprox plus the dreaded to revalve it and he would get it working properly,

Non remote reservoir shock with preload, ride height and single proportional damping adjustment.

BMW unit aprox £80 + spring £35 + fit spring £12 + Revalve £ 150 = £277
Adjustable preload, rebound, high speed and low speed compression

Hit another problem, this time with the shorter RVF linkages.
With the wider spring, it fouls on the swingarm, not even allowing me to get all the linkage bolts in.


So until the shock is revalved and shortened this bike will be running all VFR lower linkages.



Also did a bit more work to the engine with all the zinc'd parts back. Will get some pics when all bolted up.

If the shock is longer than stock mate then you wont need the RVF linkage. How much longer is the BMW shock?

Yes it is. approx BMW 312L, VFR 309L

If the shock is longer that will lower the bike wont it?
