I may need to borrow a 46mm socket if my mechanic doesn't have one to lend me. I took a few days off from the bike as I had personal errands to run and my first job interview to prep + do (done now).

Think I'll have a look at getting the engine out the frame today, if I can do that then I'll start work on replacing the swingarm if my clutch nut tool will fit (might just fit, probably bend it a bit though). I'll give the chain a massive scrub whilst it's off too, could do with a new one but a C+S kit is more money than I have at the moment and is something I can do later.

Going to get it re-sprung with either an 800 or 850lb spring then set about installing it.

My last MOT got an advisory for a lower suspension bushing being worn so I'll try investigate whilst I'm down there, I don't know if any of the linkages have bushings or it's the shock itself. If it's the shock then putting this unit in should fix that.

I'm going to file down the shock to get it to fit rather than the frame, my only worry is that if it's not that good (as people haven't had time to test them properly) then I've knackered a shock that I can't resell.

I wouldnt worry about it too much, there have even been good things said about the bmw shock in standard form on the nc30. Any way you look at it, its going to be better than all the tired oem ones.

Ps I would get the new spring on, set the sag and then think about getting it re-valved.

Short update: I got a job! Because of this I've been flat hunting and stuff, packing etc as I'm moving, so the bike hasn't been touched.

Got a new spring for the shock but struggling to fit it, might get someone else to do it. I'm awaiting a loctite tube delivery, then I'll get the new brass adapters fitted for carbtune, then get the carbs and airbox on. I also need a new top rad as the overflow metal pipe snapped on mine :/

I really want to get the back end done but I just don't think I can do it without an abba stand and I can't afford to throw £90 at one of them right now, maybe nearer xmas. Might have to borrow one or something. Once I've got the back of the bike supported I can get the swingarm off, swap (after filing) the shock, re-fit new swingarm, get the back wheel on and then the bike will be back on two wheels. It'll then be a case of fitting the exhaust system, torquing up the flywheel bolt, replacing the water pump O ring and then bolting it all back together.

Lots to do, little time and a budget of £3.29.

I've got an Abba stand and VFR400 adapters, also a 46mm socket, and torque wrenches.

Drop me a PM with your address and I'll pop them over, or you can collect them, if you want to borrow them. As long as I get them back a some point there's no rush. My VFR's got it's new tyres on, etc...

@laminator: If I could borrow an Abba stand for a while I'd be most grateful! PM me your address and I'll see how far you are, I'd rather collect them to save you fuel.

Well I hate to be melodramatic but does anyone want to buy a project Honda VFR400 NC30?

I was getting so close, I thought I'd have the exhaust done today and get the electrics hooked back up, just waiting for carbs. Nope.



Can't fucking believe it. As soon as it happened I turned everything off and just locked the garage. It's from the right hand side, rear cylinder, nut nearest the frame. I actually can't believe it. Furious isn't the word.

I'm completely at a loss of what to do now, it's taken me about a week on/off to get the new engine in, new swingarm on and new shock fitted, I just can't go through the pain of undoing all of that work and then redoing it.

Upon further inspection, there is 2-3mm of thread on show, but as it's the nut nearest the frame and the shock and swingarm are there etc, I can't see how anything of use could get in there to remove it.

Quick update:

Current status: New engine in frame, new exhaust system is on and bolted up, shock is in, new swingarm is on, both wheels attached, brakes and electrics are all on and connected (although I've lost the allen key that fits the brake res and it's not on properly and low on fluid).

I bought a new upper rad on eBay, the bracket is wrong, but I reckon I might be able to bend it to how I want it, so will try that later.

I'm stuck as I need a new clutch cover gasket, ordered one a week ago from DSS but they don't open until the 2nd and I go home on the 1st... ball ache. So as it stands I'm awaiting a clutch cover gasket and I need to fettle the new rad to see if I can get it to fit.

The throttle was always stiff, but now it doesn't return when you let go, probably haven't routed the cable very well, I just need to get the bike to a running state so I can ride it to Banbury one weekend, then I can do a carb rebuild and replace throttle + clutch cables, grips and my levers!
