Memoirs of a motorcycle mechanic.
USE SAFETY GLASSES

To remove lower bearing.
1/ Use a large lever to pry the bearing cage off. All the rollers will fall out as you do this and it is easy.
2/ Use an angle grinder to grind a flat (only ONE) on the bearing ring from the top to almost the bottom. You can't go all the way down or you risk hitting the lower fork crown clamp with the grinder. You should leave the ring about 2 mm thick. That way you have no chance of hitting the stem with the grinder.
3/ Use a cold chisel to crack the inner ring. It is not too difficult as the bearing steel is quit brittle.
4/ Ring can be pulled off easily.

To install new Bearing.
1/ Pack with grease.
2/ Place on stem and square up.
3/ Invert the old ring cracked ring and slide down onto the top of the new bearing. It makes the perfect drift because it is the perfect size.
4/ Use a piece of pipe that fits over the stem and strikes the inverted old inner ring to tap the new bearing into place.

Your done!

Or; as you have already been caught by wife with tank in bath !!!! :
Place Yoke in plastic bag in freezer for 2 hrs and put bearing in a sealed bag in boiling water for half an hour .
remove both and slip bearing by hand over bottom yoke .
Viola.!!!!!!!!!!!

The way I did it - big screw driver to break the bearing open.
Big screwdriver at 90 dgrees to the steering stem between tripple clamp and bearing cup, tap it in to make an edge.
Drift and hammer to move it.
loose paitience, use the M10 bolt and a flange nut as a drift with a lump hammer.

I've used the freezing bearings / shafts meathod before and usually end up whumpping it anyway

so there's more than one way to skin a cat ;)

and too be honest i use a variation of all three,
it's the grind bend and remove method, followed by the heat it, freeze it, tap it, then whack it into submission to re-install method :o

but as long as it's seated square and undamaged, the jobs a goodun and it's time for a cuppa

Yeah - about that .... A while back I found myself on the road to Oxford. it was nice when I set off but I took my scooter jacket in case it got cold. It pissed down. Lucky the jacket's waterproof neoprean and a low lining so it's stretchy and goes over my leathers.
I got there and it was a 3en1.
He was embarrassed and gave some latex mechanics gloves by way of tribute (4 boxes ).
Got a double flash on the way home :( but didn't get a nip :o

You just like hitting things don't you Boris? ;)
Conventional wisdom says to know your limits. To know your limits you need to find them first. Finding your limits generally involves getting in over your head and hoping you live long enough to benefit from the experience. That's the fun part.
