Re: the battery is not charging (update)
The reason I asked is because I found a fazer 600 reg/rec on ebay for a good "buy now" price plus they'll post to South Africa for fairly cheap.
The ad says it fits R1/R6 up to 2002 but I guess just because it fits doesn't mean it's as good...
The thing is, yes some Reg/Rec on eBay are cheap but then they either don't post to South Africa or like one guy, want to charge 38 pounds for postage...

Re: the battery is not charging (update)
ok so i found a "98-00 YAMAHA R6 5EB REG REC REGULATOR RECTIFIER" for 25pounds posted to South Africa.. it looks a bit tatty but I guess if it works then it's fine...
That's about a third of the price a local shop wanted to charge me plus I had to give in my old one(so that they can rebuild it for resale)...

Re: the battery is not charging (update)
Nakes: From what I've seen most of the Yamaha reg/recs off bikes of the same era are the same units. There are some differences, but as long as it has 3 'charge' wires, a positive and negative then it'll be no problems using it.nakes999 wrote:The reason I asked is because I found a fazer 600 reg/rec on ebay for a good "buy now" price plus they'll post to South Africa for fairly cheap.

I have a trx850 unit that I got cheap a while ago that will make a nice upgrade to the crapola honda unit on one of my bikes.
Yamaha units are the way forward, and yes they can be had for very cheap if you look around. They take regular sized spade connectors, it's a simple job of soldering them onto your honda loom (crimp only at your own risk!).
@ Mark: Get it done!

^ Chalk and cheese really!! This picture really shows off the better heat shedding ability of the yam units (which is probably a major player in their better reliability).
I reckon upgrading to a better reg/reg (Yam or quality aftermarket brand only) is essential on any nc30, from problems I've had in the past it just aint worth persisting with honda units. You'll only be stranded once before you choose another brand!
Hmmm, this probably deserves it's own DIY sticky writeup (will get it done in a slow period at work soonish Mods!

Just for info and help if you're unsure, here's some pics of a yam R6 00-04 unit fitted to my nc30. You'll need to cut off the honda reg/rec plug and solder 5 standard size (insulated 6.4mm) female spade connectors on. Mine is only held in with 1 of the original bolts, no dramas whatsoever, drill and tap another hole if you don't like this. If you look carefully in the second (bad) pic I had to hand file an amount off the top corner of the reg/rec fins so that it would clear the subframe ribs - don't be put off, it took 2 minutes the reg/reg material is very soft. All up to fit was about 15 minutes work (most of that wa waiting for the soldering iron to warm up!), knowing that I have a bulletproof reg/rec is priceless.

I'm on it Cammo!
Waiting for my reg rec to come. Also, I reckon the output of the GSXR stator has gone some way to killing my latest reg rec that was £80!! It whups out a lot of power..
I'll take some sketchy pics when I do it and we can have another workshop sticky.
bonus!

Re: the battery is not charging (update)
I've bought a R6 unit off ebay and now the wait for it to arrive... could take weeks...
But in the meanwhile, I've been using my brother's reg/rec off his NC29 and now that too seems to have failed... (I'll need to test whether it isn't perhaps something else that's failed now)
What can I test/check to see what's killing the Reg/Rec?

Re: the battery is not charging (update)
I did the diode test on the NC29 Reg/Rec and it seems fried.. it's not showing what it did before I fitted it to the NC35... it was fine in the NC29 since forever.. what are the chances that it'll fail in the NC35 after only a few days of use.. which is why I suspect something me be causing it to fail. So before I fit the R6 unit, is there something I can check to ensure that it isn't something else that's causing the Reg/Rec to fry. I wouldn't want to fry the R6 unit as well because it's a 2 to 3 week wait for it to arrive and the bike is my only transport...nakes999 wrote:I've bought a R6 unit off ebay and now the wait for it to arrive... could take weeks...

Re: the battery is not charging (update)
Ok so my R6 Reg/Rec finally arrived today... I'll be fitting it tomorrow...
Is there any reason I can't just pull the spade connectors out of the plastic housing on the standard R/R plug, wrap some insulation tape around each connector and plug that in rather than cutting the plug off and putting other spades connectors on?

Re: the battery is not charging (update)
I think the Honda connectors use smaller spades so they wont' fit the Yamaha connectors.. but you can try :)nakes999 wrote:Ok so my R6 Reg/Rec finally arrived today... I'll be fitting it tomorrow...

If you do put new spades on.. you MUST solder them on and not just crimp them.

Re: the battery is not charging (update)
The Honda connectors worked just fine. I just took them out and wrapped some electrical tape around each connector. plugged it all in as per the instructions above, wrapped all the wires with electrical tape. All seems fine, 13.8ish to just below 14v at idle.Neosophist wrote:I think the Honda connectors use smaller spades so they wont' fit the Yamaha connectors.. but you can try :)nakes999 wrote:Ok so my R6 Reg/Rec finally arrived today... Thanks for all the help and advice

I hope this R/R lasts longer than the NC29 one that fried before it... that one lasted a few days...
