Im only getting 150km/93miles until reserve, working out at about 30mpg. Thats mostly spirited riding on twisty roads. I am running 118f/120r jets. The carbs had 110s all round when i first got it before xmas and was advised to got to the 118f and 120r as i have an aftermarket end can on. But with the 110s I think i was getting about approx 190km before reserve. I am thinking of changing them down to 115f and 118r as i think its running too rich, end of the exhaust is black and sooty now which I understand to be an indication of richness. I'd also like to have a bit more range on the bike without having to look for a petrol station.

If the can is straight through, you'll get some soot on it anyway. If you're worried about being too rich, have a look at the plugs, or take it to a dyno and get the air/fuel ratio measured. My 35 has a sooty pipe, but the plugs are not covered in crap.

Had a look at the plugs and they look normal. Will maybe see about going to a dyno. I have the pilot air screws screwed out 2.5 turns would that have any effect on fuel consumption?

That's normal mileage for that sort of riding, leave it as it is. If you want more range then back off your right hand...
Exhaust colour is not a great indication of air/fuel ratio.

If thats normal for that kind of riding then Im happy enough as long as I know its running right. Hard not to twist the throttle on the wee bike such fun!

Crikey, bit of a difference yesterday! After three or four tanks going to a little over 190, on the way to Manston the bike started coughing at a truly pathetic 160.

Last weekend I did mostly of m-way and dual carriageway miles at your normal sort of cruising speed and got good figures. Yesterday was more of the same. Normally I get better miles. Only thing I can think of is that it was extremely windy the whole way, and I was wearing a big backpack. Same on the way back, although as yet I don't know what I used because I did do enough miles to get to reserve. Due to the miserable cow at Texaco in Manston refusing me petrol until I took my lid off, I went further down the road and almost regretted it. 15.1 litres in at the next Shell (who were 3p cheaper, coincidentally the same 3p I was told they'd put the price up the day before the air show, funny that....), so that was a little close!
Anyone else think that a severe head/crosswind for most of the journey would have such a big effect? Wind, rain, almost new tyres and the Medway crossing on the A2 were, er, fun...

Well, technically it doesn't need filling up until it's run out...
But yes, I get where you are coming from and I very nearly ended up embarrassed because I'm too stubborn to take my lid off.

I always take my lid off, just easier IMO

I fill while sitting on the bike, so i get a full tank. i don't mind taking my lid off to go pay but taking it off to fill up is just a pain. I'd have done the same.
