What happened to Mr Hodge?

erm a little electrical problem.
he kept blowing 10amp fuses as soon as the bike was started, before it set the CDI alight.
Think there is something shorting somewhere. shame really as it ruined the day for him.

Yeah its a mystery to me at the minute still! and yeah only getting half a lap was a bit of a pisser, but im sure other people had a worse day then me yesterday.

Bike start straight up off the button first thing in the morn, put the warmers on and let the bike warm through, toddled off to the briefing, inters were first out after the meeting for some sighting laps so warmers off bike fired straight up again and off i went, got round to brittens and then thought id wind on and see how the hrc carbs were working, all seemed good, until i rolled off to start braking for hizzy's and it just cutout and locked up as i had come down a couple of gears, 2stroke mx skills meant i had the clutch in quicksharp and rolled onto the run on thats the old track.

Once recovered to the pits i tried the other a123 battery thinking this would be the problem, no different still dead checked the fuses and the 10A fuse in the ignition circuit was popped, robbed the spare out of the van, put it in flicked the switch to run, and it turned over no bother, then popped the fuse again, nicked another 10A from the van put that in and it again popped instantly, and then then cdi started smoking


Nipped to halfrauds to get a ytx5 battery (£38 the bastards) and some fuses as at this point the van was short on fuses too!!

No different, standard battery in, the rhd switch was on run, put the fuse in and it popped straight away before we even tried starting it and yet another puff of smoke from the now deader than dead cdi

Scratch head have another look at all wiring but find nothing, try again, and all is fine, bikes cranking over tho is getting no spark from the dead cdi, pi$$edoff.com at least it was only a £50 trackday and not a £150 one!!

Worst of all i packed up and went home just after lunch, forgetting about my lunch token msv gave me for booking on and never used it!!

Anybody got a spare cdi and loom (Can be hacked) kicking around?

dug out a spare loom you can have pal, just had the headlight blocks chopped. apart from that its perfect.
however my spare CDI's are boxed and moved, and are in wales somewhere.
i wont be seeing them anytime soon.
PM me your address will mail this loom over in a jiffy bag this week for you.

Bad luck there Kurt,
For what it's worth I made up a race loom for my Triarm when I had some power loss issues last season, it's a complete doddle and I'm no electrical God by any means. You can buy all of the connectors for Jap bikes online quite cheaply and you're only connecting up the bare minimum to start and run.
Took me about a day, I could do one now in about 5 or 6 hours.

Yeah it was all a bit annoying, just wish id have gotten more than half a lap before it ate itself, was really looking forward to the day but such is life.

I am a complete electrical numpty, but having said this i have taken the loom off today and stripped it and labled it all up so im learning (yesterdays lesson was thet once all the smoke comes out of the cdi then its broken!!!)

I am tempted to have a go at making a race loom but its the little connectors that i struggle to find as i dont know the correct terminology to search under, stuff like the solenoid connector on the end of the +ive battery lead, where the hell do you find the appropriate one.

Anyway i think i have found a bit of a mystery with my loom but ill post it up in the workshop section.

I'll try and post a link to where I got mine, it's just a matter of counting how many wires are in each of the connectors you need (if that makes sense) they are all absolutely standard. I'll just have a look now....

The more i look at making my own Loom the more achievable it seems. plus if i get problems again i "might" have a better understanding of it and more chance to repair it.

Ive been running with the charging system but im going to remove that and attach a trickle charger harness. its one less thing to cause a problem.
