Iv always been told that you should fit a matching bearing to the race.

There are a few ways to get it off , most invole brute force but when I changed mine the other week I was lazy and got my old man to do it at his work.

no, i just dont see the point in spending 60 odd quid for the same quality item.... just cause its oe does not certainly mean it is better. id like to keep costs down. i found bearing for 27 quid and id like to buy them... but, id also like to buy one, lower bearing inner race.. thats the only thing i need... so i do not see the point in buying a complete set when i can re use more than half of the things that i have. if Rick O can supply me with one. lower bearing inner race, then id be happy to but it off from him. im sure he'll have a reasonable price to it.

Sounds like a bad idea to me.

Do you have any pictures of the lower bearing you removed?

I've always replaced them in pairs... tapered needle rollers are cheap enough to buy a set.

Come on Ersan...stop being a tight arse...a bike that works properly is far better than one with a paint job, some shiny bits and so on.

If the bearings have died on them races then you'll probably end up with the next set wearing prematurely too.

This is a bloody good example of "Buy cheap, buy twice" You'll get nowhere near the life out of the kit that you would if you bought the right gear first time...

u wanna see pics of the bearing? :D okay. here are the pics of the bearings.... as i removed them they crumbled into pieces. the bottom bearing looked fine, until i took it out and the whole thing crumbled.

here is the stem with the lower bearing attached... looked fine, turns fine, but sometimes jams...



and here it is after i removed them, along with the top bearing crumbled too....



now, all i need, is ONE lower bearing inner race. i do not need the whole set, because ive already placed an order on them bearing kits on eBay... so i am only looking for one of those inner races that go on the lower part of the stem... anyone got a spare please?

The crack is that they are a set of two parts - the races and the bearings. Swapping one and leaving the other is no the best idea and as a result the odds of finding a spare lower race unused is pretty slim.

As Mark has pointed out.

They wear as a unit. Even though it might look fine it will have wear on it to match the old bearing (there aftermarket bearings btw as they didn't come with needle rollers as standard.)

If you try to fit an old lower bearing with a new outershell the wear will be different and it's likely the bearing won't roll properly.

so what do you suggest then? if i cant find a spare lower bearing inner race, what am i suppose to do? ive got the outer racer, and the baearings ordered.... and i really cant use the bearings without the inner race... sooo what now?
