@ Spike - just get it blasted mate. I am 31 and would have been (and still am I suppose) one of the people big into racing that never did it, never walked the walk and should have tried it earlier. I am doing it now as it needs to be now before me and my wife get some babies on the way and the money to waste is no longer there.

Bit like Matty in that I have done loads of trackdays (25 or so) and they don't excite me as much as they used to do. I think racing for 15 minutes is going to buzz me out far more than an hour or so at 90% speed will.

If racing is as addictive as crack, would trackdays be as addictive as cocaine?

Yep, last year I did my first race at 30 and had a ball.

Spike: get out there and do some track days first! I would recommend doing some track days then a race at the same track, circuit knowledge is a massive advantage for a newbie and it takes a while to become familiar with tracks.

you would be better off doin some track days this year,
save up some cash/get a loan (i did the 'get a loan' bit, as if i can save 4 grand, lol)
buy race bike thats already a race bike, and race that next year.
i was going to use my road nc30 for racing but decided against it, and bought the zxr
its alot easier to buy a race bike thats already sorted.

A couple of facts you need to know if your thinking about racing ..
1) You need track time, lap times are not important (not yet anyway) consistency is key if your out on track you need to be consistent so the fast guys can pass you safely if you are not consistent and predictable you are a danger to everyone else so gaining track experience on test days is not ideal, You can do track days at any circuit at 17 with an ACU license and track day instructors are a very good way of improving you riding, No limits have a good selection of very experienced instructors who will work with you in depth on all aspects of your riding absolutely free.
2) Your first season racing is your novice year whether its one race or a whole season, So if you plan on just doing one or two races to get into the swing of it see how it all works before committing to a whole season next year (like I did) just beware you cannot run as a novice (even though you are still wearing your novice bib) so if you find your lap times are up there with the fast guys (novices) you wont be bringing home any trophies for your efforts, Not a massive problem but can be a bit disheartening knowing that things could have been different if someone has explained the rules.
3) Keep the bike simple, Fancy clip-ons loads of power dymags ect.. your novice year is all about learning, Corner speed, Braking, Throttle control ect.. its no use having these things if you don't have the fundamentals of track craft, save your money the simpler the better.
4) You will never have any money or free time ever again.
5) Go do it you will never regret it !

as i said this is wrong, iv called round castle comb, msv (brands cadwell snetterton oulton) and lydden and only lydden will let me out on a trackday, so testing is my main access to track time

im not looking to trick my bike up atall, its just my standard clip ons the bar pinch bolt is stripped and i fancy making something for my bike with the facilities i have access to.

Its like i always hear from racers, better to have raced once to have watched all your life, and i agree from my kart racing experiance, and believe me CMSMJ1 any racing is addictive, and it always takes all you avalible money (and abit more) but thats part of the fun of it.

o iv been offered some harris clip ons for £45 but not sure if i have th emoney to spend on them, if any of you are interested i could put you intouch with the guy, iv said can i get them for cheeper without the tubes and am waiting on a reply, if not I think there up for grabs.

How much for the clip ons and body work? Do the panel have closed lowers ?
