Well a little bit more work has gone into the bike over the last month or two and I've been riding it quite a bit.

I finally got around to getting the wheels powdercoated. Total cost was 50 quid! I had a double-take at the price until I realised later that the apprentice had been left in charge of the operation and was just pocketing the cash from the off-the-street jobs!

Did a great job, I told him there might be a couple more sets on their way to him, savvy young pup!!





Looking forward to getting an 18" back on the bike, the 17" rear looks too small to me.


Next job is to jack the rear up a bit and tidy a few other things up. I also have a standard rvf system that I want to fit to it (for now). The laser exhaust (half system) and hrc can is deafening me when I ride it, and I'd rather not have to wear earplugs on a street bike!

Well, I have been fiddling over the last couple of months.

I replaced the Laser half system with a standard rvf exhaust system and muffler because the Laser was too loud for my liking (needed earplugs which is not very practical on the road).

I couldn't believe the power loss going back to a standard setup, it felt as though it had lost about 10hp at the top - no exaggeration (admittedly I left the jetting in the carbs for the race system which wouldn't have helped). The old system would lift the front wheel hard shifiting into 2nd, the standard setup just bored me.

I bought a very cheap Chinese carbon can and fitted that which helped gain back a bit of power. It was intended for a cbr250/400 and quite a few mods were needed to get it to fit my rvf system.




I also had a problem with the carbs that were on the bike. It didn't like cold starts, the choke didn't work. In the end after lots of fettling I could only put it down to the choke/enrichening circuit having fuel residue present that I couldn't clean. Ultrasonic cleaning will probably sort them out.... but I bought a set of used rvf carbs instead - my first!

A very different animal to vfr carbs, the rvf carbs are in my opinion better suited to a road bike because of their smaller diameter, along with other improvements that were made to the design of the carbs.

Of course, I couldn't leave them alone so 112 jets were installed, along with Rick O sourced hrc replica carb springs and 2 smaller velocity stacks in an effort to increase the top end power characteristics of the carbs. rvf throttle cable fitted and the jobs a good 'un: (oh, also found the obligatory emulsion tube in the wrong carb )





Fitted them up, started teh bike and found that one cylinder wasn't firing. Thought about just taking the bike for a thrash to clear the carb, but reluctantly took the carbs back off the bike - good decision! One of the floats wasn't letting any fuel into the carb, a metal tab on the float was very bent not allowing it to hang down far enough to let fuel in. I'm pretty sure this is why they were sold after the previous owner couldn't sort the problem.

Fixed, refitted, and the bike revs cleanly and probably more swiftly at low revs than most road setup nc30 carbs I've dealt with (understandably given the smaller diameter of the carbs).

First road ride will be this weekend with the rvf carbs fitted, I'll be interested to see how the top end compares to a decent setup set of nc30 carbs, I have high hopes.....

The bike is in a state that I'm pretty happy with for the cost (yes, I could go on spending on it, but when will it end?!).

Yeah Mark was riding it plenty until a couple of weeks ago.

Frankly I've lost a bit of interest in road riding and have decided to lend it to my bro for the next year or so.

Hopefully he can have more fun on it than I am at the moment (and take a few pics!).

Itching to get back on the racebike though...

I hear you man. I've not ridden no9 since June.... Shit..that is a long time!

I don't get on with road riding any more and just cannot be arsed with it. I enjoy a ride out but I think that racing takes away and focuses the urge to go fast.

Good on you for loaning it out..hope he doesn't stack it!
