I'd say it's the valves, they've probably touched down on the cams and that's why the last owner sold it. Probably saying "It ran really well but I think the carbs need looking at ... "

Quick update, discovered the spark on one and four were considerably weeker than two and three, I've replaced the coil for one and four and they look a lot better.
I'm now smoking from the exhaust and popping on all four, I've ran out of starting fluid so guna go grab some.

Do check the valve clearances when opportunity arrives though.
