as Magg has confirmed, the plug needs to be disconnected (and obviously check the side that goes to the genny, you wont get power from the reg/rec side.Neosophist wrote: While your in that area disconnect the plug and check the genny side, set the meter to AC volts, and measure between the wires, you should have aroudn 50v with the engine running at 5000rpm.
Make sure this connection is solid and re-check your reg/rec output
the plug might be melted becuase of a dirty connection. Its not always cause to change the reg/rec.
So long as the battery is fresh and kept charged up if not used often and you keep the plugs clean you shouldnt have much issue.
I still run the original reg/rec on my bike.

I've just checked the yellow wires again with the reg/rec disconnected and there is still nothing there. the multimeter stays at 0.00v
I checked both sides of the block connector just incase I was being an idiot and checking then wrong side (its happened before and will happen again i'm sure).
The bike has been connected to the trickle charger all night but with the alternator wires and the reg/rec disconnected it fired up instantly! probably better than when everything was working?????

I dont get any readings at all, volts or ohms. all 3 yellow wires must be dead? I'm working all day Saturday so it will have to wait till Sunday to be stripped down so I can check that connector between the V
Do you reakon I could use the bike with the alternator and reg/rec disconnected and just rely on the battery if I put it on the charger every night? It would be a temporary way around until I could get the bike fixed properly but it is my only transport and I have people running round after me so I can get to work every day.

If you are desparate, provided you do not need head lights and limit your engine starts to the bare minimum, a fully charged good capacity battery should run the bike for a few hours. The ignition system uses very little power and the stop lights and indicators are on only intermittently. You could even bump start the engine and save more battery power.
With the three yellow wires disconnected at the rect/reg you should measure either 1-2 ohms between pairs of yellow wires or infinity. The AC voltage between pairs can be either 0.00 or some larger. No ohms or volt reading suggests your measure technique is flawed.

The volts reading goes to 0.00 and I'm pretty sure i'm doing that right cos I'm getting the correct voltage readings on the battery. The ohms reading stays at 1 no matter what I do. Is there anywhere else on the bike I can test ohms readings to find out if i'm doing it right or not?
If I run the bike with the wires disconnected it cant damage anything else can it?

If you connect the multimeter probes together on the ohms setting you should read 0 or you could measure the resistance of a light bulb, the result could be 0 to a few ohms depending on the wattage of the bulb and the multimeter ohms range setting.

DC is for reading the battery, AC is for the wires.
Usually an AC setting is like 200/300v.
Its odd to have nothing at all, if your meter is set to the proper volts are the plugs and wires ok?

When I get home tonite I will post a pic of the multimeter I am using and can check if i'm putting the dial to the correct setting. I've never been shown how to use one so everything I am doing is what I think is right but........
