If it's just commuting that's the worry, can't you pick up a cheap 250 crosser or an old GPZ/ZZR? Something you wouldn't mind just chucking a disc lock on and bollocks to it if it got nicked. At least that way, you keep the NC for pleasure and it's less likely to come a cropper. Commuting is the worst thing for your pride and joy.
Anyway, you should be fine just plugging into a trickle charger once a week. When I'm using my bike all week, I tend to stick it on the charger Friday night till Sunday night/Monday morning. Standard lead acid battery. I don't really need to do it as I've not got an alarm fitted but with the cold weather, it helps having the battery tip top for cold mornings.
