On a technical note.

You can remove the cover from the waterpump without removing the pump from the engine if you are careful.. be warned though, if you pull the pump out with the engine full of oil then all of this oill will come out the big hole you made in the side of the engine by removing the water-pump. So if in doubt, drain the oil and coolant first.

Remove waterpump cover and inspect.. make sure the pump is nice and shiney and clean and not rusted and that all the blades are ok.

Put the kill switch on and crank the engine a couple of times... make sure the pump spins.

I had a very similar problem.. waterpump was missing all the blades and it was rusted to crap... signs of a very neglected cooling system / bike.

The replacement pump off a second hand bike was silver-shiney!

I flushed the cooiling system and chemically treated it to remove scale and rust.

Also removed the sump as the pump had siezed and snapped the rod off it, was found in the sump strainer!

3 years later and its' still spotless after using proper coolant in the bike.

Help!!!!

Ok, my coolant is empty even tho it's only been filled recently so I've either got a leak or me water pump has had it. Just tried to drain the collant so I can take water pump/ rad off to look but I can't get the bloody drain bolt off...completely siezed on (and I'm not particularly strong)
Would it be ok to take them off without draining as im guessing there won't be much left in the system anyway???

you can take the hose off the pump from the lower rad if you want to.

As long as you are happy that this will pout everywhere! get a tray/bucket ready for it.

that worked a treat, cheers!!

there was still loads of coolant left in (prob about a litre) but none in the coolant reservoir.
I can't get any further with taking the pump off as it seems no bolts have ever been touched on her and are stuck fast...my feeble lil arms can't undo them :( so I need to be patient and wait for the weekend for the boyf to help.
<frustrated sulk>


but, am I right in thinking that as there's so much coolant still in it but not in the reservoir that it's not a leak but Is probably the pump?

the reservoir doesn't _need_ to have coolant in it. it is an overflow and if the bike gets hot enough to spit fluid out the rads then it pisses out the top of the bottle.

When cold...the bike sucks it back in and if some was lost....then there will be less in the bottle.

The 8mm bolts that hold the pump on are prone to break if they get swung on. a 6 sided socket is the doozy for these bolts.

I thought it was meant to be between the upper and lower level marks?
ugh, I'm feeling like a real spactard now :(
oh well, first go at doing anything with a bike ever so I shouldn't expect miracles...best I leave it to the experts.

on the plus side, after taking my bike apart and having a lil tinker, I feel loads more confident around her now.
just wish I had the knowledge.

In an ideal world it would be between the marks - but as yours has been getting hot it has boiled it and poured it out the top there is none left in the bottle (once the bike has sucked the rest of it in as it cools down)

Good skills on getting stuck in - it seems daunting but at the end of the day someone put it together using tools so it is not actually anything special.
Wait til you see the gubbins for the waterpump - it is basic stuff.
