Take comfort in knowing the only silly question is the one that’s not asked 
On the plus side, I know my way around the bike a bit better, all the fuel/breather lines have been replaced, the plugs / rectifier / fuel tap and diaphragm has been checked etc
I also had the fun/pleasure in letting my mate know who I bought it from the outcome as it plagued him for some time too.
