ok update time

dremeled up the 2 X H4s and they work a treat on dipped beam but on high you get a black spot directly in front (so it wasn't my big thumbs )
i think it's because the H4s have a grey covering over the front of the lamp to reflect the light back onto the silver covering inside the fitting but the standard tj lights don't have a silver covering to reflect the light

i may have another play with em at a later date but for now that's it

sorry chap's but that's a fail, unless someone else want's to run with it
on dip there excellent but with a dodgy high beam there as much use as mens tit's

Will the black top come off with some acid/meths/nitromors/oven cleaner/drain unblocker or something nasty in the garage?

Just spent a bit of time researching different possibilities for H4 bulbs. As you mentioned H4's are normally designed to work with reflector style headlights rather than projectors. Unfortunately I couldnt find any without the coloured tip (which as you said bounces the light backwards to headlamps reflector). I even looked into H4 LED's which are available but will probably incur the same legal problems as HID units.

So I had a dig around in my garage and found an old H4 bulb. I managed to scrape off most of the coating on the tip with a stanley blade, then removed the majority of the remaining residue with some acetone and a rag. It's not all gone (there's a slight 'smoked' appearance) but wasnt a bad result for twenty minutes work:-

very useful tread, I hate riding after dark because of this, especially this time of year, dark winter evenings a coming, I live about four miles from town. I remember one night coming to the last of the street lights, and almost coming to a stop, it was like, what the hell just happened there! and light was already on full beem, out with the oil lamp!

it was staring me in the face and i couldn't see it,
as i've already cut the H4s down i'll scrape the coating off and let you know what happens



Edit : job done i'll have to wait for it to get dark then give em a go

well i gave em a try last night and you still get a circle of darkness in the middle which get's bigger the further away the background is
so not good unfortunately

looking at the 2 lamps together you can see the H4s two filaments are basically blocked from shining forwards by the little cup inside the lamp, one is inside the cup the other is behind it so you'll not get any light directly in front and are obviously designed to shine forwards off the back of the light fitting



so still not a winner

Hope I'm not asking a dumb question here that's probably been covered before (sorry in advance if so!!) - but is there any complete light unit from another Yammy that would fit into the fairing slot of a 4dx/3tj - that has a reflector plate inside so that normal halogens etc can be used as opposed to the projector lamps?

Although they're a similar shape to the 3TJ the FZR1000RU, FZR600 and the TRX850 all use standard reflector headlamps and bulbs afaik. I've a feeling they could be made to fit though?

The only other Yamaha of that era I can think of with a projector headlight is the SZR660 but I dont know what bulbs they use.

The FZR1000, TRX850, FZR600, FJ1200 should all fit and I think they all use a single H4. there are some lights that have a H7 spot and H1 standard lamp, not as pretty as the 3TJ though.

You could of course cut open the plastic of the unit and change the paralever lamps for something better.

Managed to get an FZR1000 headlight unit from ebay for £15.50 incl postage and a bulb!! So I'll have a go at converting it. I know it won't be quite as nice but it'll be a hopefully a cheap and cheerful fix and might even light up the road a bit better.

Can't believe the price of those koito lamps!
I did email that guy on ebay several times that were about £8.50 each but he doesn't reply - hence doing the conversion now. Thanks for your advice etc.
