D'you think they're mining and smelting the raw materials for the pistons themselves..........?

I am afraid this could be considered bad news by many of you. This is the letter a few if us just received from Ms. Sarah Lambert at Omega Pistons:

Dear sir,

Please accept my sincere apologies for not coming back to you sooner on this.

There a couple of things I will need to advise you of and ensure you are happy with before we proceed. I will then require some more information from yourselves should you wish to go ahead and order.

The pricing we initially discussed was based on a forged piston, providing we had a suitable forging tool. Since receiving your drawing, it has been confirmed that it will not actually be possible to manufacture this piston from any of the existing tooling we have within Accralite or Omega.

There are two options from here. We can either proceed with the design and manufacture from solid/3D or you can purchase the tooling so we can manufacture from a forging.

The solid/3D pistons will be priced at £165.00 each + VAT including pins and circlips. If you wanted to add any extra coatings on the pins or anything like that though, that would be charged seperately.

Should you want to persue a forged design, the tooling will cost around £2500 + VAT. This tooling would then remain the property of Omega Pistons but would be used exclusively for your pistons. The pistons would then be charged accordingly depending on quantities ordered, with a minimum batch size of 12 pieces.

If you are happy with either of these options and wish to continue, I will require the following from yourselves:

1. I need to confirm what bore size you would like. We think it is 57.0mm, is this correct?

2. We are unable to obtain rings for this piston (if you remember, I mentioned this may be an issue). So for this piston, you would need to supply your own rings, we will require a sample ring set please.

IR17;m told that when we enquired with our ring supplier, we were advised that they would only accept an order for 300 pieces as they would have to be manufactured and shipped in from the USA. This is not a ring set we intend to use in any of our other production pistons, nor do we think we would be able to hold any extra stock. So if you wanted us to order this ring, you would need to accept all 300 rings.

3. Can you also advise what the con-rod width is? Or the distance required between the bosses?
>>>]I DID THAT ALREADY, why is she asking again. The left hand does not seem to know what the right hand is doing at this company - Mike Norman]<<< :!:

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you require any further information

Kind regards

To me, this says they are really not interested in the project to make pistons "on the cheap". I have been reading more and more about Omega and Accralite. They have a very strong reputation in the industry, but I have never used them personally. I have a strong relationship and trust with Cosworth. I certainly have never been dragged along by the guys at CW like Omega has dragged this out. That's for sure. So, for me, now that the price is very close to that of the Cosworths, I will stick with what I know works...and works VERY WELL.

However, for some of you, the 3D option at 660GBP might not be so bad. Just use Yamaha FZR400 +1.0mm Rings. Hopefully, for some of you that were so negative of the price I quoted for the CW, now you'll understand I am not just crazy, that is the price you pay for high-end stuff. I am about to make another CW order. If anyone else wants CWs instead (I have a few people that have already jumped ship on the Omega deal to get on with the CWs) please let me know. I am still willing to help you guys with whatever is needed for these Omeags, and am very ineterested in how they come out, but I don't think I am ready to jump brands at this point.

Copy of a PM to Mike.

Hi Mike, This looks like a dead end re Omega. I wonder, she/they quoted prices for forged pistons at the start of the thread. You sent specs for what appears to be the simplest piston. The question is can they make a forged piston at 57 mm in any shape or configuration, ie, slipper or (?) with their existing tooling. Might be worth a final e/m to Sarah.
I'm interested in the CW''s. Keep me on the list.
Jim

Mike's Cosworth pistons are a work of art, but not cheap. The advantages out weigh the cost. Much lighter, easier on the rods and crank, more compression uses Yamaha rings (expensive, but designed for very high rpm). The design work is done and all we have to do is put in an order and wait for them to arrive.

OK. To pull this thread off to the correct one, please see the link below.

I need to hear again from anyone who is interested in Cosworths instead of the Omega's. I think everything will be the same as in that link. Hopefully they don't raise the price. If I can get 12 sets ordered (48 pistons) I don't think they will. Right now I believe I have a solid 6 sets to order, so I am half way there. But I need to get confirmation to make this a go.

Please e-mail or PM me your interest, your timeframe and the wrist pin off-set you would like (Std, -1.25mm or -3.00mm). The non-standard require custom rods. Once confirmed, you will be responsible to pay 50% down and the rest on delivery. This is what Cosworth asks of me. I am hoping to have them by October - perfect timing for a Winter build.
