This is the offending article...
Looks like (or similar) to a Sun unit. Gave me more than a few years service on the road - heaps better than OE.

Smoky wrote:been burnt by my one too... although ive seen somewhere that you can attach a CPU cooler to it, the fan is just the right size- doesnt do an amazing job of keeping it cool, but if i remember right i think it was about a 12 to 15 degree decrease...
Hey Smoky I wrote about said subject in my thread here's my quote:
padawan wrote:I 've seen the recent thread on the the workshop page http://www.400greybike.cc/newforum/view ... =24&t=2926. Thinking, If I go down this route I'd go for a Suzuki reg/rec as I've seen a lot of reports saying they're very reliable.

Whilst mooching around on the net I also found this article - applying PC fan to aid cooling: http://www.one-ring.net/vfrfaq/reg-rect.html. I'm actually going to go down this road, will have pictures of this on my thread soon. Figured that it can't do much harm.

RIGHTY HO..

A little update on this issue..

I have since found that one of my yellow genny wires had frazzled and snapped inside the connector block and so I have not had any charging.

I have gone over the moto with a fine toothed multimeter and have the follwing things to ask advice about

1: AC output for the GSXR genny - was 26 at idel and went as high as 80 when revved... This seems much too high as I seem to remember that the NC30 specs are for 50V ac?

2: The reg rec wiring has been snipped and new wiring to plug been crimped and soldered on - is this going to be strong enough?

3: Running the bike I now get 14.5 volts at idle..and a blood hot reg rec.

5: running it at 5k revs I get 14.45 volts and a bloody hot reg rec.

6: is the GSXR genny going to beat up my reg rec? Worth me buying a GSXR one to cope with the output?

7: Could one of the other guys with the same G Force mod please check their charge rates and AC output for me when you get a chance?

Mine is a K5 rotor and windings..

Rock on...at least it bloody works and if the reg rec pops the race bike will be total loss before the smoke has cleared!

Mark, the GSXR genny is putting out over twice the power of honda original, so no wonder your rec/reg isn't loving it. Your aren't wrong with the numbers.

Thanks Ronni,

Holy shi.t! lol - I guess I need a rmoe hardcore reg/rec then...I'll go and find one from some adventure bike that can handle a massive generator capable of heated grips, jacket, kettle and spotlights!

Cheers for confirming my suspicions.

I wonder how long the reg/rec will last?

It's 50v at 5000rpm, probably goes higher than that at higher revs..

Check it at 5000rpm and see how much deviation you have.

And mine gets toasty too, is your battery good? They got hotter when the battery gets older and can't take power as well.

I put This stuff

Between my Reg/Reg and frame to assist heat transfer to the frame.

cheers Neo. This is a GSXR1000 K5 rotor and generator setup - gives a steady 26/27 AC across the three wires at a 2k revs idle. A blipped throttle sees it shoot into the 80s

I have also used silver paste on my reg rec and it is easily hot enough that your reflex action draws you away before you can think to hold on to it..

I am going to fit a 10cm fan to it so that it is cooled a touch more, especially when in traffic.

Battery is good - have several batteries that I keep all topped up and rotate between the bikes (a legacy form my previous generator frying itself and needing to take a battery to work so i can fit it to get home again ;) )

Mark, if needed I can sort you out with one of the very reliable ones that I run. Not cheap, approx £100, but mine have lasted over four years with no dramas.
