Why would you do that? Ok it weighs a bit but the hassle of bumping your bike everytime, most racers leave them on over here

No, the starter is staying... ever tried to start a hot engine with flatsides, when held at the back of a circuit when a race has been red flagged and we have been held for ages and its a hot day dressed in full race gear???..... the starter stays :) plus my bike only weights in 147kgs and thats with all fluids and 2 litres of petrol.
