i've got a mate who'd do it for me i imagine, he's been into bikes for ages and has rebuilt a few engines.
I'm just trying to work out what it is so i don't end up stripping it, then having to wait months for the part

Maybe cheaper to find a second enginge ... the cost of a gasket set will be about the £100 mark before you buy the part and pay for the guy's time

Hmmm the thing is, i don't know how to gauge the damage, obviously withotu taking it apart.
its just that although the problem is there, its more of an annoyance than drastically bad, i wanted to sort it out before it gets worse. That's why i'm hoping its the detent arm and or spring as told by someone else here, and the FZR forums

If it is one of the above that is at fault then i am pretty sure that it is an engine out and strip down job to repair.
It's the time taken ... the part will be cheap if it's a return spring (I don't know this for a fact) strip down will mean the whole engine as the part is in the gearbox and probably on a gear shaft. You might be lucky and it might be accessable by taking the sump off ... but the chances are pretty slim.

i've been told i can get too it by removing the clutch cover, oil pump and clutch assembly.

It wont take long to take the clutch ect out so get her in bits and have a look, you might spot the fault and it wont cost a penny to have a peak!

yup i've got a mate who owes me a little favour so i'll see if he'll be kind enough to give me a hand
if i cant see what it is i'll take pics and post them up
does anyone know if anything needs to be done beforehand?
been told on the FZR forums i need to drain the oil, but surely that would only be necessary if i was to remove the oil pump?
Thanks for the feedback btw

Yup you need to drain the oil as you will be removing the clutch cover and the oil level is above this.
Make sure while the clutch is out you measure both the steel and friction plates for wear.
