To be honest i'd say that the NC30 is slightly more comfortable to ride and less cramped than about 9/10 modern 600s.. Especially the R6, I had to double check I was on the bloody thing...

depend what you have come from.
the fact that you say you are doing a test tends to suggest you have been on a 125 (or a restricted "big" bike)
my 2nd 'Big' bike was the VFR400 NC30 and i hopped onto it not knowing anything else. thought it was the normal position for sports bikes!!!

for the past while i have been on a '98 fireblade and hopped on my VFR for the first time in 4 weeks last weekend.
i forgot how cramped it was, i felt like my knees were touching my ears, but after an hour, i was back into the swing of things and settled into its confined dimensions!

from September to February i rode for the west coast to the east coast of Ireland, just over 2 hours non stop, twice a week (8 hours in the saddle) through the sh!tty cold,damp weather and never felt sore for any sustained peroid of time.
i am 5'11 on a VFR with standard rearsets
