You will definitely need the front off the ground, can you take the belly ban off and use a piece of wood under the engine and a jack? The photo below (scanner has done a wobbly) shows the page from the GK73A manual showing how to tighten the bearings. If you get this far I would grease them up as well.

I realise that you don't have the correct tool which makes tightening up more awkward. I would however invest in a 'C' spanner, you could probably buy one in your local motorbike shop at little cost. Remember adjust so the steering movement is smooth with no play.
If you lived a bit closer I would have popped around to give you a hand. Hope this helps.
How are you getting on with the brakes?

Re: Front End Help
Thanks Gazz, that is helpful. To be honest, it had crossed my mind to use something to prop up the frame, I was considering a jack, or a chain over one of my garage roof beams. Not sure about weight issues with the latter though!
Do I need to make sure the bottom of the yoke is seated correctly first, then tighten the top C-nut? I will definitely be getting the correct tool. had a look in my local bike shop today without success.
I've not really looked at the brakes to be honest, i'm taking it a bit at a time. I'm satisfied that they're not dangerous, I think that one side is rubbing the pads slightly because the disc is a bit loose on its dowels. They're nearly in need or replacement anyway, so i'll do it all in one go I think.

Re: Front End Help
So the procedure is to lift the frame so the forks drop down onto the lower bearing. If I then tighten them up, that should solve the poblem then. Any idea where I can get a locking tab for the nut?
Certainly can send you some pictures, but what exactly do you need to see? The underside of my seat is not exactly pretty, it's going to get tidied up over summer when i've got my Lammie back on the road. I can't be doing with electrical tape at all, gotta put some heat shrink tubing on it! Also, do you want me to lift the tank? Can that be done when it's full?
Oh, also any ideas what to use to clean my calipers when I have them stripped off? Or more correctly, what I shouldn't use!

Re: Front End Help
Hey Jaicen,
Come and have a borrow of my peg stand and a jack for a few days - this will let you get the front wheel off the ground so you can sort this lot out.
PM me if you want it mate - I cannot give it you long term as I need it to hold my race bike build up but for a few days I am cool..
I am in the S8 - sure you are down Netheredge/meersbrook way? If you don't have a car to collect it then let me know your address and I will drop it off.
Can talk brakes too if you want.

Re: Front End Help
Dude, that would be awesome! I work in S8, but I live off Mansfield road, just past the Birley pub. It's certainly no hardship for me to come on over regardless. I'm not sure what the weather's doing the rest of this week, but perhaps I could drop by or meet somewhere for you to have a look and see what you think?

Hi Jaicen,
Ya dont need a tab washer, just adjust the play out and then the top yoke locks the c-nut in place.

Re: Front End Help
Ok, I don't want to seem ignorant, but i'm not sure how exactly the top yoke would lock the nut in place. There's nothing above the C-nut, where i'd expect to see another nut or something, hence me wondering about the lock tab. Certainly the tope yoke doesn't sit onto the nut.

Re: Front End Help
Jaicen,
That's cool that Mark can drop by and give you a hand, what did we do before the internet??
I use Photobucket.com, I upload pictures to my folder (you have to register with a user name and password) After you have uploaded it you will notice under the picture an 'img' tag, just copy it and then paste it into your message and the pic appears in your post, like the photo from the manual in my post above, good luck.
