well last night we fitted the new reg/rec. with extra wires to the battery (with fuse) to bypass any possible electrical fault. Engine off it was reading 14.8 volts. Fine. switch engine on, dropped within seconds to 12.2 volts. Did all the voltage tests with lights on/off, tickover, 5,000rpm. All reading 12 volts. New reg/rec is f*cked already.
tested the alternator, was reading differently across one of the wires.
So, my conclusion to this expensive testing session:
Alternator has taken out the reg/rec and has been failing all this time. Despite having a new one last year. i think this is because when the alt was replaced it was not at the same time as the reg/rec, hence chasing our tail with the problem, replacing this bit, then that bit etc.
Could this be possible?
Also, we took the casing off the alternator, but thats as far as we got as you need a special tool (?) to get it out. Is this correct? Can it be removed without the tool?
I have a feeling when/if we ever get the alt out it'll be partially burnt out like it was last time.
I can't get it to Rick's cos its not rideable and don't have a trailer I don't know what to do now. tried to ring him but no answer.

However - ask the race boys about this - I asked mr France when trying to eliminate a possible reg rec prob causing a fuel starvation like hunting - when my 23 was thrashed hard . (over voltage or under voltage when stressed/hot - causing micro cutouts of the cdi). ->

" Can't i just take out the reg rec MR France? - Wont this eliminate the whoelproblem if thats whot it is??"

Further to i gleened - On a CBR400 - you actually go 'total loss' just by throwing the REG rec out the window, then you can then throw the stator/alternator/and rotor thingies off the end of the crank out the window too - as these play no way into the ignition timing - there just a shit load of mass with inertia and inductive resistances. Presto! race preped...

I want to know - can we do the same with the VFR - as it so simple? anyone -

But in your case JO - get a gooode batteriee - charge it up prop - dump the reg rec - go for a long ride thats never far from home.... if its good fer quite some time (take your AA card and mobile) - GO TO THE ROCK WITH US!! . Well give you our batteries as the day goes by - just to keep you topped up, and are bikes will charge the olds one up as we charge around. Yer bike will even be a tad faster for it ... theoretically...

PS - trying to start up an then cut out 10 times to kill the bat - just proves the battery was poorly charged (and possibly sh@t)

tickover does not really generate much charge for the battery. The each kick of the starter motor wolfs a massive ampage - thus the battery will just diiiiieeeeeeee! You need a good thrash to compensate for the electrons moved each start up.

just get it done jo. you already paid for the trackday so get it done so you dont lose that money.

the bike will have to be fixed either way...

I'm gonna ring Rick tonight and hopefully take the bike to his this week to get new loom, alt & reg/rec fitted. Will let you know when we need the trailer.....
