Well this is the first time i've ridden the bike so ie it did.
Why would there be black smoke from the exhaust, the residue on the paper was bits of carbon, any thoughts?

black smoke is an indication of over-fueling...running rich!!!!
this could be because of the jet size, too big.
air filter clogged,a problem with the float level, stuck etc.
also the choke beng stuck on but this usually causes the revs to be too high.

you don't need a "kit". All you need is to see what jets are in it. whip one out and go to pretty much any bike shop and buy one a size or 2 smaller.
Standard kehin jets - cheap as chips and in all good shops!
I would guess you have 118 front/120 rear sizes now. Looking at getting some 115 and put them in the front and the 118 in the back.
Get the carbs off and check as if you already have small jets then something else is not right! (the safe money is on jets being too large though)

Right - just taken the carbs off (lot easier than i thought) and the front jets (two cylinders closest to the handlebars)
are 118 and the rear are 120.
Looked in the manual and it tells me the bike is a k series engine no 120xxxxxxxx and both jets should be 110
does this sound right?
BTW inside the carbs themselves was spotless!!!

like cm says, they are too large....especially if you are running a standard exhaust or just a aftermarket end can!!!
id go for what cm says and fit 115 in the front and put the 118 in the back

The jets will have been changed to suit that can. Get the 115's in the front and the 118 in the back and it should be much better.
good luck!

Just a quick update
Bought two 115 jets today - bit of a treck to get them though 150 mile round trip.
Took the bike for a quick spin round some local B roads - What a bike :D
Thank you all for your help, very much appreciated
